Reasons why my night at Vertigo was a 1-star experience: 1. Waited in line for over 20 minutes (normally I wouldn't even bother, but I had a friend visiting) 2. The smoking room that made my clothes smell like 1998 in DC when smoking was allowed in bars 3. The crowd: the lame, the creepy and the ugly 4. Music wasn't terrible, but it wasn't mixed well...apparently Trainwreck was in charge 5. My friend's purse AND jacket got stolen. Really? See #3 x 100. Fuckin' A. In summary, while all of these things may not directly be the actual bar's fault....yes, I recognize that, it doesn't make my experience any better or make me want to return any sooner. Hello and farewell, Vertigo. It's been a dizzying night.

Blank & Jones and Cosmic Gate were in town playing at Vanguard. I had to see them. I cruised up from San Diego. I had never seen these two DJs live nor had I ever been to Vanguard, so I was looking forward to the show and exploring the club. Once I arrived parking was a breeze...valet took my keys and a $20 then parked my car. I then remember my ID was in my wallet and my wallet was still in the car. I asked the valet to return my car. He was very nice and ran back to where ever he had parked my car and drove it back. I got my wallet  thanked the valet and went on my way to the Vanguard door. Before I drove in I noticed the front entrance was packed. Luckily the valet pointed me to an empty side door. The bouncer chic frisked me, confiscated my eye drops, then waved me into the club door. The place was packed...the sound system was awesome...the lights were hypnotizing...I was in heaven. I walked over to the bar to get a me drink, you know, to really get the party started. Drinks were the usual, you DON'T get what you pay for... but I was really there for the DJ's. Once I got my drinks I was back on the large dance floor. There was a huge crowd which included lots of sweaty kids (girls and guys) wearing baseball caps and after a while taking their shirts off or in their wife beaters...no dress code apparently. The show went on till the break of dawn :) Blank & Jones and Cosmic Gate came from very far and they didn't disappoint. I left for home very happy with a loud "ring" in my ears and wide awake from all the enery drinks. Can't wait for the next great DJ to come into town so I can do it all again! ...well, except for the sweaty kids taking their shirts off...that was lame.

I must add a disclaimer: I'm not the biggest fan of going out in LA. When I grace the world with my presence, I'm looking for great dance music, non-pretentious people and all around fun. We attempted to start the night at Les Deux, but I was immediately repelled by the sounds of horrific music. Bryan Adams? Summer of 69? Oh hell no. Not a panty dropper. My girlfriend and I (with our new Australian compadres) met up with some friends here. I loved the ambiance. The outside cabanas were A+. I found myself lounging on one and the bouncer told me I had to sit up. Am I that sexy? Damn. ;) We went into the main dance floor area; totally awesome. I never like the music when I go out in LA to the "hotspots" and this place was no exception. Pick a genre!  Preferably one that doesn't suck. I think I might have a promising career as a DJ in LA. That being said-- I had an awesome time cheesing it up and dancing around with my friends. Its all about the company you keep. It wasn't too crowded and if this was an off night, it was just my speed. I need room to move. Minus a few stars for: -the fight by the reflecting pool. Boys, come on now. -drinks costing more than $14. Apparently this is typical here. que sera sera...... -music. Let's raise the taste levels and stick to better genres. All in all, I'd go back. I will definitely do more research before visiting LA next time. Hollywood isn't my bag.
