by Michael B. on This place reminds me of something in San Francisco. It's definitely worth the trip over there. I went on a Tuesday night at around 7 pm. It was full, but certainly not overcrowded. I'm guessing it gets too crowded at peak times. Had a couple of delicious Ommegang Witte beers (about $6 each). Didn't try the food, but it looks like they have a reasonably priced selection.
by Myrtle Dacanay on Looking for a relaxed place for a couple of drinks outside? This does the trick. I went to Red House Lounge for drinks with my father during a short trip to Austin. We were looking for a place to chill and have a few drinks before going to dinner elsewhere, and we stumbled upon Red House because El Chil, just next door, doesn't have a bar. All we had were a couple of beers and chips+salsa (nicely spicy, for an East Coaster, at least ;-), so this review is primarily regarding the ambience of the patio. It wasn't too hot for the middle of July, so we sat outside in their vegetation-rich patio, which also had misting fans, which kept it quite comfortable. The patio is laid out so that there are several distinct areas, with tables of different heights and a few vegetation screens, making it feel more intimate than its size. Each area would be good for a group of up to 6 people or so, perfect for a happy hour with friends, but it would also work for an intimate drinks-meet for two. The only thing that kept me from giving my experience 5 stars was the service--the server seemed a little put-upon at times, perhaps because at one point the restaurant apparently lost power, and it took a little while to get the music and mist-fans back online.
