I will preface this by saying that I work with fish both professionally and as an all consuming hobby, so my standards are much higher than the average tourist. Pricewise it was fine- not any different from most of the aquariums I've visited (in as many places across the world as possible). I know how high my electricity billls alone are from my two tanks. So I never really question the high price of entry at aquariums (the cost of synthetic salt, even at wholesale, gets expensive at that kind of water volume!!) As for the fish- there are some GREAT saltwater fish displays. The garden eel tank is absolutely amazing, a real educational experience for me, and there was the largest longnose hawkfish I have ever seen in my life. The whale sharks are not-to-be-missed (and impossible to miss) and seriously one of the most unique experiences I've ever had the pleasure to witness. Coral wise you're better off going to a fish store. I've never seen a decent coral display tank at a public aquarium. Their displays should rival a real ocean reef and they never do. Considering the kind of permitting an aquarium has access to compared to the retail side it should be easy-peasy. As for freshwater, this is where it really went downhill. I'd heard the discus display was nice, and, as these are considered the 'king of the freshwater fish' I was excited to see what Atlanta could do. It was terrible. All the discus had a skin infection/parasite, there were single, aggressive, schooling fish in there all alone (as in no-one else to school with) and the live plants were sparse and ridden with issues as well. On top of that, they were all captive raised discus which have been selectively bred over generations to display a variety of bright colors. Yes, they were prettyish (although not particularly high grade), but they are not something you could find in the Amazon river! They are easier to keep, which is probably part of why they had them. They had panda cories (a cooler water fish) in a tank that would have been kept close to 10°F higher than they should have been, which significantly decreases their lifespan. I was hoping to see a beautiful and accurate biotope (all fish from the same area), and instead I found a hodge-podge of asian and south american fish of not-particularly-amazing-quality and questionable health. If you can't be scientifically accurate and you can't take care of your fish, then why bother existing?!!!! In the end I was disappointed but mostly because it was overrated. It was a decent 2 hours spent, but I hoped to be busy for the entire day and I found myself done much earlier than predicted. If you're looking to keep the kids busy, it's not bad. If you're looking for a world-class aquarium, then just keep on looking.

Pretty decent, clean, convenient. Nothing to write home about, but does the trick if you have business up Mopac/Parmer way. Service was friendly but spotty. I never once had anyone at the front door greet me or ask if they could help me with my bags. Don't these guys want tips? Duh. I recommend using Priceline. I've been able to get a $90/night room rate for this hotel twice, although it's a blind bid and all I knew is that I'd be getting a 3- or 4-star hotel in the Arboretum area. Room service was only so-so quality food, which is what I pretty much expect from chain hotels. One nice plus is that you can order fairly good migas for breakfast. Also handy is the Starbucks right in the lobby.

We got what we were looking for here - a dive gay bar. Fun pop music from the 90s. Older crowd that was definitely cruisey. Strong drinks. Excellent people-watching from the open front window looking out on Santa Monica Blvd. It was quiet enough on a Wednesday night for an old friend and I to come here to catch up over a few drinks. We couldn't quite figure out what the deal was with the condom bucket by the door. It was empty. Is it supposed to hold used or unused condoms? We hadn't noticed it on our way in, but left feeling a little dirty after we saw it.
