Came here on a Friday night and was very pleased and amused. The DJ played great music: Top 40, Latino, a little Hip-Hop. the Mayan is HUGE. a large dance floor that gets pretty packed by 11:00pm. There are 5 bars that I counted and a small room upstairs that plays Bachata, Cumbia, etc. Cocktails are pretty average priced. Paid 8 bucks for a vodka-soda. The crowd was very diverse. Older, younger, Latino, Asian, pretty much everything. It was really cool. Minus the baby-making on the dance floor, I think you'll find me the Mayan again.

We finally tried Little Baobab the other day for dinner. We had a party of 6, which gave us the opportunity to sample most of the menu. We went for the $20 3-course prix fixe menu (served until 7:00pm) which includes appetizer, entre, dessert, and cocktail and is a huge bargain. The appetizers were a little hit-or-miss. The best were the gambas (shrimp), perfectly cooked and served in an intensely flavorful broth accompanied by little pieces of pita bread, and the fried plantains with tamarind sauce. The crab and avocado appetizer was underwhelming (it seemed to be mostly canned tuna with a little bit of crab meat mixed in), and the salads were fine but unexceptional. The entrees were all excellent. I had the salmon and also tried two different lamb dishes (one in a peanut sauce and one in a curry sauce), a chicken dish, a tofu dish, and a shrimp dish. Everything was great but the lamb, and especially the curry lamb, really stood out. Dessert was a little bit of a letdown, as they were out of several items and the only option was a chocolate souffle with vanilla ice cream. The souffle was quite dry but was tasty enough. The cocktails were also a bit hit and miss. I had a "fleur," a strong ginger and whiskey concoction which I quite liked. I sampled a banana drink which was drowned in what seemed like generic margarita mix to the point where you could barely taste the banana. Overall, the food and drinks were very good, if a little uneven, with a few standout dishes. At $20 the overall value was outstanding, and this is what really pushes Little Baobab into 4 star territory. I might even consider rating Little Baobab 5 stars if not for the terrible service. Our waiter was extremely inattentive and impossible to flag down (or even find- taking a "smoke" break maybe?). In an establishment this small, where there were maybe one or two other parties dining, this was just inexcusable. Despite its flaws, I'd certainly recommend Little Baobab for a casual, bargain-priced dinner or drinks.

HOORAY FOR THE LOCAL!!!! I have now been here for a number of times and each time was better then the last. I was here again on yet ANOTHER SATURDAY night. The bartenders here are always very fast and attentive when sitting at the bar. The drinks are great and MAN! can they make a red headed slut! (the shot of course) Couple all of that with some really fun rateclubsers, Lauren S. and Irene (NYC) and you are guaranteed a great night at The Local. The place is almost always crowded but never so much that you can't move around. I have had the wings here and they are very good. As some one in my group stated "just the right amount of meat and greasy fat" now doesn't that make you want to run out and get some right now? The local is a must stop for bar hopping. Great spot.
