Let me join the others who question the "gay bar" moniker. I mean, I seriously don't care one way or the other...it was a great place that seemed friendly and open to anyone and everyone. I found the place through the SF Weekly website that listed the Future Islands were playing there yesterday. It was my birthday and I wanted to go do something fun. Well...El Rio is FUN! The place has a nice long bar in front and on Mondays features $2 wells and $1 PBR. Thank You recession pricing! A long shuffle board hugs the wall opposite the bar. In the back of the main bar is a pool table and a door to a deck overlooking a spacious and quirky back patio. Citrus trees, heavy with fruit, hang over the big patio covered with picnic tables, stools, and counterspace. And around the corner on the deck is the live music venue; a long and thin (14 feet wide and maybe 50 feet long) room with an elevated stage by the outer deck. Before the band started I was hungry and asked the doorman if they allowed outside food. He said that they did and he recommended Can Cun. I headed across the street, got a KILLER burrito and quesadilla and brought it back to my group. We chowed in the back yard, drinking beer until the band started. When the band got going we filed into the room and loved the intimacy of the space. The sound was great, rockin, and loud without completely blowing out our eardrums which was a plus. Everyone danced their faces off and when the bands were done around 10:30, the masses filtered back out into the back patio to enjoy beers and cocktails under a white floating Gibbous moon. I'm a New Yorker and the crowd made me feel right at home. It was if someone took a crowd of Williamsburg hipsters and teleported them to San Francisco. I felt right at home! I'm here another five weeks and El Rio is now officially on my "return to" list. Can't wait.

Nice space, good lighting, questionable music. Overall a decent scene. There is no dance floor, so people just randomly dance all over the place. As for the music, it was a random mix of pop, hip hop, dance...it was good sometimes, and sometimes it was just weird.

I liked the concept (beds and all) -- the line outside was long and the place was pretty empty for a Fri till about 1. The night did get a lot hotter when people got onto the floor. I would recommend liquoring up before getting if you really want to have a good time. Btw, the bathrooms were pretty psychedelic.
