by Reed Velmontes on reviewing as a concert venue - i'll be honest that webster is a decent place to see a show. sure, the drinks are expensive, but thats not the #1 priority for concerts. the space (while larger than i'd prefer) is well laid out in that you can move between the stage, bar and bathrooms pretty easily. from what i have experienced the sound is also good, and the staff friendly enough.
by Grace C. on Upon the recommendation of J's friend, LF, on Day #4 of my staycation, Sat, 9/4 @ 10p I presented myself to the bouncer, showed them my printed guest list email and was waved in without fuss. Bypassed the $3 coat check. Noticed the worn carpeting as I descended the stairs. I was the 4th person to arrive. (This was the first time I had been to a non-salsa club in SF in 2+ years, so I wanted to arrive early and dance.) First thing I noticed - there were NO seats, In other words, no chairs or tables for non-table service guests - aka the majority of the crowd. No seats at the bar. The lounging couches with big, square coffee tables were roped off (and guarded by attractive women in short shorts and boots). I asked the bartender if there was any place to put down my coat & bag. He emphatically said, "You should NEVER put down your bag in a nightclub. ALWAYS use coat check!" Felt like telling him I've been going to clubs (since I was 18 in NYC) longer than he's been alive. Ignored his advice and spotted a railing - the corner of which I tied my bag and put my leather coat on top. {No staff member said anything to me.) I waited for LF to arrive (J, by the way, was around the corner at Starbucks - working on his laptop.) In the meanwhile, I was cornered by a leech (who stuck to me persistently for nearly 60 min) and basically gave me the highlights of his life in the first 5 min: Leech (in confessional tone): I dislike being a slave to technology. Just because the latest iPhone comes out doesn't mean I'm going to buy it. Me: My BOYFRIEND just got the i4. We've been together for SIX years. Leech (enthusiastic & didn't take the hint): That's great. Is he going to join us? He can show me his phone. I just bought my first laptop. What do you have? Me (while wishing my friend would hurry up and arrive - she was 30 min late): A Macbook and a PC. Leech: My first computer was a Macintosh. Great games. What kind of PC do you have? Me (while texting J about the leech): Lenovo T400 Leech (perplexed): Never heard of it. Did you buy it at Radioshack? Leech (without bothering to hear my answer): Do you like online dating? (Again, not interested in hearing my reply) I hate online dating. I was on http://Match.comfor a year and hated it - well, I did meet a woman towards the end. We ended up dating for 3 years. Me (thinking it would be a miracle if he met another woman who could stand him for 3 minutes, let alone 3 years): That's a long time. Leech: I guess so, but in the end, didn't work out. I can't believe I'm here. I've been on this guest list so many times and this is the first time I've come! My buddies (bragging tone) are all back at the hotel asleep - they're all married with kids and they were tired by 9p. At 9pm, I was pounding down the beers! Me (Going to stick to salsa clubs and gay/lesbian clubs henceforth): Your friends have different priorities (like not boring women to death). Couldn't handle anymore conversation so I started dancing. The Leech danced with me and kept trying to get closer and closer - I basically used up the entire dance floor and was dancing away from him - hoping he would get the hint. When LF arrived, I was forced to introduce the two of them, and still he persisted in dancing with us. The DJ seemed to have multiple personality - catering to the over 40 crowd, the 20's crowd and the crowd that listens to Top 40/radio. He played "One more time" twice within an hour. Also, the LIGHTS were turned ON around midnight and stayed on for half an hour, then got dark again. WHY? Dance floor was CEMENT. Ouch. Wood definitely better for joints, especially if you like to jump up and down. Didn't go to the bathroom, but LF says it is very clean. Crowd was touristy. Women wearing stilettos and short dresses with blousy tops. I realized I was the only one wearing a slightly midriff bearing top & pants. I also observed many of the young women didn't seem toned or fit. Also, my friend and I were dancing way more energetically than the rest of the crowd (with the exception of one Capoeira-moving Asian guy in a baseball hat). LF commented the most attractive man was the busboy who didn't speak English. There was a rotund guy (40's) in a white suit and hat who kept a cigar in his mouth while dancing on a table with two women in their early 20's on either side of him. Guess he was a high roller. Entourage all in their early 20's. They followed him onto the dance floor and cheered him on and when he left, they left the dance floor and continued partying in at their table. Around 12:30a, the place got busy and dancing was difficult for me - too crowded. Note: LF told me she has plenty of room when she dances there - people get out of her way. Note: she danced at Vessel until she was nearly 8 months' pregnant three years ago - which I think is amazing. During a break, another guy approached me and tried to make small talk - after the screaming name intro's, I excused myself and left.
by Loyd Zeilman on this place rocks. the bouncers were cool. the bartenders, except for one, were all really nice and drinks were very easy to get. the cocktail waitresses were sweet. the slide going downstairs is cool especially if short skirts are going through! :P the music was good and i loved the seating. i was here for a microsoft party. the food was amazing. chicken in cream sauce, mashed potatoes, pasta, etc. they ran out of mac n cheese but were kind enough to make 4 new plates just for our group. deserts were being passed around all night. a fantastic party at a fantastic location.
