Swankiest of Swank. This club reminds me of Vegas, which is a very good thing. Came here with Garce Y. and Brando for their One Year Anniversary Circus Themed Party - thanks to my stellar boss lady Kathleen =D We got here a bit early, as we were banking on basking in free champagne and having a somewhat chill night. Upon entrance, we grabbed our glasses and hit the main room, which is covered in tables and booths. It can make you feel a bit inferior if you are not baller enough to get a table. We waited for about an hour, watching the great Circus Acts perform and enjoying the music, before we decided to get more drinks at the bar. Right around that time, the club began to fill pretty quickly with people and the tables began being occupied. The demographic is definitely a bit older than us ( 22 and 23 year olds here) which makes sense with baller this place is outfitted. However, you don't really notice that as the club gets pretty packed and everyone is just out to dance and have a good time. The club demographic seems pretty ranged to as everyone there had difference dress codes - anywhere from Affliction & rosaries to Thermals & scarves.... Interesting right? All in all, we three had a pretty great time and the club really knows how to get a crowd together to generate that fun time energy. Hopefully, I'll be baller enough at some point to get a room/booth for a bad ass celebration.

Similar to J K our party of 20+ all purchased VIP tickets for Saturday's Halloween party and were told to wait in a line that wrapped around the corner and never moved.  The bouncers and staff members would not give us an honest answer as to what is going on.  They each made up a different story ranging from "every ticket is a VIP ticket so everyone has to wait in the line" to "we have a private party that will be wrapping up shortly".  We left after overhearing that there was no open bar and that this was a complete scam.  Needless to say, this ruined a big night. Also, the promised refund has only been randomly processed for a select few.  2 of our friends received emails regarding the refund while others haven't.  I contacted the promoter via the website that the owner listed yesterday afternoon, and have yet to receive a response and no one has been answering the phones.  Carnival, it's time to own up to your mistakes. Don't take the chance on potentially ruining your night, never come here.

A friend and I stumbled into Coda not expecting much: it's right under the 101 overpass, and looks pretty much like a jazz club and not a restaurant, but I figured we were just going to get some bar food: no big deal. In retrospect, I should have known by the yummy smells responsible for luring us in - which turned out to be lots and lots of truffle oil - that this place had very good food. My friend and I shared truffle fries, his Wagyu beef burger, and my Squash ravioli in truffle oil. These people sure like their truffle oil, and I'm not one to complain! As the band started to warm up, the host came to our table to let us know we were welcome to stay for the show, and that they wouldn't be charging us a separate cover, since we were really just there for a late dinner. The warm up act was sort of painful: he reminded me more of Wesley Willis than any other famous person I tried to be reminded of, even though I could tell he was really into it. Unfortunately, we didn't stay for the main vocalist who everyone was excited about. She had an Erykah Badu look and feel about her: no head wrap or Afro, but just earthy and soulful like that. She was swaying to the music and smiling, and I enjoyed seeing her there, even though we couldn't stay.
