i probably came here for the wrong reason. that being i actually wanted to eat dinner and have a conversation with my friend here. we came on a weeknight around 6pm-ish. we got some drinks and settled down to dinner. i had chili - which was fine. but the whole time we were eating, there was a band on stage warming up and they were playing with the tech specs. it was literally so loud i had to shout across the tiny table to my friend who was sitting only a foot away. and on top of that, i got bitten by mosquitos twice over dinner. shouldn't all restaurants have those bug lights over the doors that attract and kill all insects??

FOURSTAR*S on the space alone. I've only been to the Mayan once for a special event and there couldn't have been a more perfect venue. Visiting this club was a real treat. I'm sick of the typical theater style night clubs that L.A. offers with your typical mezzanine level hanging over a typical flat floor -- but the Mayan got it right. Secret tunnels. Side areas. Actual design. It's a fantastic place. I'd love to find reason to go here more often... And for electronic music trivia people -- this is the club where John Digweed's 2xCD Global Underground 019:Los Angeles session was inspired... _C$

A cozy gem of a place, its always dimly lit a la speakeasy with someon plugging away on the piano or even the "Japanese Bob Dylan" strumming his guitar. Looks like a sketcho-hole-in-wall from the outside. That's what makes it perfect. The food is satisfying but nothing to write home (or Rateclub) about. Its the vibe. That lazy, unpretentious, cozy vibe.
