by Diane I. on i've always wanted to try middlesex and just hadn't gotten around to it. enormous room was closed last night so we popped over here instead. it was an okay place if you're in the mood to dance. i wish we had gotten here earlier. the dancing had already ensued and i wasn't quite enough cocktails in to take it. the dj was awesome though.

That about sums this place up, nothing is very noteworthy, in either direction. the decor is kitschy, but not in a cool way - tao is far too cavernous to be kitschy-cool, instead it verges more on tacky-kitsch. service was decent. the only reason I might ever go back is to try the mango-tamarind martini. that definitely caught my eye. other than that, no thanks. if i want buddha bar in paris, i'd rather get on a plane!
by Caroline M. on OK, so, a few of us had reviewed The Box before, but for some reason the page was changed to "Hubcaps Bar & Grill" in Illinois. WTF, mate? Anyway, I'm re-posting my review here... This place is absolutely beautiful. On the outside, it's completely unexpected (as previous reviewers have noted). Inside, it's one of the best-decorated venues I've come across in Manhattan. The mismatched wallpapers and most of the furniture look like they've been salvaged from buildings of various historical vintage; it's a bit European, a bit Old South, a bit speakeasy. You almost wish there weren't a municipal smoking ban, because the smoke would certainly complete the atmosphere (and some folks were busting out the cigs anyway). The upstairs balcony was my favorite part, divided into little private booths with couches in them. It's the kind of place you've really got to see for yourself; completely unexpected in this neighborhood (or any other) in downtown Manhattan. The dinner-theater performances, too, are of great quality. Very entertaining stuff. Re: libations, the drinks were delicious -- didn't get any food. Wine selections are great. Definitely expect to be plunking down quite a few bucks, but it's the sort of venue that's so unique it's worth the price.
