I would really prefer to give about 2 1/2 stars. This place could be soooo much better!! It's nice, but not the most outrageously fun place I've been to. Gone here twice with friends, we always have fun, but I think there needs to be a few changes! Watered down, expensive drinks!! $14 for a teeny malibu sunrise that couldn't get my 12 yr old sister warm! I swear that so-called bartender chick couldn't make a good drink to save her life! The concept and decor is really nice, and the bathroom, with its one-way mirrors, are trippy and really cool. Music was alright, although I wish it were more dancable at times. If you're gonna have expensive drinks, make sure I can feel 'em. Big dance floor, give me music to dance to! And for a club that's supposed to be "selective" with the crowd, you could sure re-evaluate some of the guys you let in there, and some of the girls for that matter.

Went here on a Thursday night to hear a friend DJ. From the moment we stepped to the door we were treated like VIPs. Hehe, it pays to know the DJ! Inside, it's all dark lacquered wood, Asian brocade walls, and rosy Japanese lanterns. Plus a gigantic mirror ball for that kick of disco fever. The high ceilings give it an airy, spacious feel, even when the floor is packed. I liked the fact that there's a bar, stage, and dancefloor like a traditional night club, as well as restaurant touches like comfy booth seating and small ottomans and coffee tables. The crowd was a youngish mix of gay and straight. I felt like a lot of the kids were college freshmen going clubbing in NYC for the first time. That could be a con or a pro, depending on your preferences, I suppose... I went during an all Depeche Mode tribute night, and one of the DJs (not my friend) was pretty um, bad. But I had fun drinking sake and watching people lose it to the music. Will go back for sure, on a night that they're playing more than one artist ;)

OK, so, a few of us had reviewed The Box before, but for some reason the page was changed to "Hubcaps Bar & Grill" in Illinois. WTF, mate? Anyway, I'm re-posting my review here... This place is absolutely beautiful. On the outside, it's completely unexpected (as previous reviewers have noted). Inside, it's one of the best-decorated venues I've come across in Manhattan. The mismatched wallpapers and most of the furniture look like they've been salvaged from buildings of various historical vintage; it's a bit European, a bit Old South, a bit speakeasy. You almost wish there weren't a municipal smoking ban, because the smoke would certainly complete the atmosphere (and some folks were busting out the cigs anyway). The upstairs balcony was my favorite part, divided into little private booths with couches in them. It's the kind of place you've really got to see for yourself; completely unexpected in this neighborhood (or any other) in downtown Manhattan. The dinner-theater performances, too, are of great quality. Very entertaining stuff. Re: libations, the drinks were delicious -- didn't get any food. Wine selections are great. Definitely expect to be plunking down quite a few bucks, but it's the sort of venue that's so unique it's worth the price.
