A friend of mine suggested Cover 3 for a girl's night out, and I was reluctant. Upscale sports bar? So not my thing. Sounded like a gathering place for annoying yuppies to sit around and drink overpriced yuppie drinks and eat overpriced yuppie appetizers while watching college football on oversized yuppie flat HD panel TVs and go deaf from the ridiculous ambient noise. OK, so it is all that, but after being there for a bit, I just kind of got to like the place. Maybe it was the most excellent girlfriends I was with. Maybe it was the friendly, super-nice (and slightly flirty) waiter, who chatted with us throughout the evening and made my recently divorced friend feel flirty too. Maybe it was the strong drinks. Maybe it was the fact even though the place was packed and a game was on, surprisingly, it never got so, so loud we couldn't hear each other talk. (Other restaurants, TAKE NOTE. Being able to hear other people talk is a plus. I'm especially talking to you, Blue Star Cafeteria.) The tables and booths were spread apart nicely so that you never felt claustrophobic or that the people at the next table were sitting in on your conversation. Drink prices were sort of reasonable, especially during happy hour, and the calamari was terrific, especially with the arugula on the side - great touch (ask for the sauce on the side if you'd rather dip than have it drizzled on). The pork lettuce wraps were less good - too sweet, in my opinion. For the meal, I had the Cover 3 salad (too small, too expensive and dressing too sour) and the beef enchiladas, which were very good, especially as the meat was recognizable chopped pieces rather than ground. For dessert, we gals shared the key lime pie (wonderfully tart) and the huge brownie thing, which I actually didn't like too much - overpoweringly sweet and surprisingly little actual chocolate flavor. Overall, not bad at all. It's not the kind of place where I would normally choose to go myself, but I'll happily trot on over when suggested by friends.

I loved everything about this place except the location. I was a little drunk from a wedding when I visited & all I could remember about the location was that it was in a strip mall next to a Safeway supermarket. No Bueno! Get past that & there's no turning back. The atmosphere draws you in like a moth to a flame & then curiousity strikes....it looks like a bar so will their food taste like 'bar food'?? Nope, not at all!! I had a delux burger, sweet potato fries, a red velvet cupcake for dessert & a martini (I forget what's it's called) to wash it all down. Ahh...that's the stuff [food] dreams are made of.

I'm not too cool for Marquee, and neither are you. Marquee's popularity has certainly peaked, dipped, and now plateaued, but that's not a bad thing. In the circle of life, a club is born, becomes hot, then bridge-and-tunnely, and then recedes into the social firmament whence it came. Like when the lions eat the antelope, but then the lion see, it all dies n stuff, and then the grass eats the lion, and then the deer comes along and is all like "we'll see about that" and pees on the grass. I think that's how Mufasa explained it. So when you're 19 year old trustafarian friend wants to go here, don't be too cool for Marquee. You can still go, get yourself a bevvy and have a good time.
