XIV is my new favorite restaurant in LA. that's both saying a lot and not much because i'm not easily impressed, but i also just recently moved back to LA and haven't had a chance to try very many places here yet. so for now, it's at the top of my list. i really loved the decor. it's beautifully appointed, yet warm and inviting. we were seated in the enclosed patio area, which gave it an open air feel yet without the distractions of actual open air (wind, bugs, traffic noise, etc). my 3 friends and i opted to share the 8 course chef's tasting menu at $60/person. you can also opt for the 11 course ($80) or 14 course ($100) menus. if you order the tasting menu, they ask that the entire table participate. you choose your courses from the a la carte menu, and we ordered the following (this was in march '09): dungeness crab crepe with basil, capers, scampi hollandaise salt & pepper big fin squid with glass noodles, carrots, sprouts, ginger white asparagus risotto with porcini, chervil, castelmagno cheese black cod with spaghetti squash, bluefoot mushrooms, foie gras dashi liberty duck breast with seared foie gras, leg confit kobe burger with fries and farmhouse cheddar filet mignon with short rib tortellini, crispy bone marrow macallan butterscotch with winter squash cake, toasted milk ice cream, malt every item was delicious, but my especial favorites were the black cod and the filet mignon. we also ordered a lobster pot pie on the side, but i didn't think it was worth it ($64). service was impeccable and we felt very well taken care of from start to finish. i can't wait to go back and try the other items on the menu!

I've made a few trips here, largely because they were free, and although Trudy's is clearly a very popular spot (good luck finding a place to park...) I've never walked away with a happy stomach. I've either had food that tasted good but made me very sick, or food that didn't taste good that I didn't really want to finish. The chips and salsa do stand out in my memory though. All in all, my life will be more pleasant if I don't return.
