I don't think I've ever seen a jazz club serving Ethiopian food until I moved to San Francisco and here there are TWO just blocks away. The presentation and flavors are not as good as Sheba Lounge, but the food is still decent in its own right. Sure beats a menu of nachos, chicken tenders and hamburgers! Sambusa: I wasn't digging the egg roll shape. I much prefer the triangular shape which is of a thinner width and allows more eating for the same amount of meat filling. The filling itself was ok, but didn't wow me on the spices. Kitfo: Mostly enjoyed the raw beef texture except a few bites with fat or gristle, they really should have trimmed better before grinding. The spices were ok, but not as alive as at Sheba Lounge. The cheese curds on the side tasted too bitter/sour. Yebeg Alecha: It was awkward trying to pick off lamb meat from huge shank bones with the spongy bread between my fingers. For utensil-less meal, the pieces should have been a lot smaller and separated from the bone. The meat itself was tasty and tender, must have been braised for awhile.

More than half a year ago, a coworker and I found ourselves in here after dinner hours. The decor is nice, but the place smelled like poo. In the bar area, I unwillingly exchanged a few words with an old guy and a divorced guy, both of whom where assholes. Of course. I'd come back, but earlier for dinner because the steak was recommended. Hopefully not the source of the smell. I think the Steak Lounge concept is not-so-great.

So this was my first time coming here. Overall, I thought the vibe was chill. The night I went when Mohagany Brown hosted. There was a contest (two teams comprised of slam poet-veterans) where judges (regular audience members) scored performances. Some of the "veterans" I wasn't all that impressed with. The strongest poet clearly was Mohagany. This is a good place to go if you are tired of the nightclub and bar scene. I would add "good place to expand your mind," but most of the poets just weren't that deep (not nearly as deep as they thought, anyway). Cons: This place gets PACKED! My friend and I ended up sitting by the fire exit door (for most of the night anyway, then some guy told us it was a hazard for us to sit there, whatever...) To ensure that you have seating, make sure to stand on the line that forms rather early outside. Other cons? Posers...yup, plenty of 'em in the building. Don't get me wrong, I appreciated the diversity of the crowd. It's just that everyone wants to be "deep" and "conscious." Finger-snapping and a "umhumm" is not necessary after every expletive, pause or stanza.
