You want to talk cheesesteaks? You gotta go to both Pat's and Geno's... so that when you tell your friends about Steve's Prince of Steaks, you can definitively say "Eh, yo. I know my cheesesteaks, aight? And Pat's ain't it. Geno's ain't it either. Steve's is where it's at."

"We're new here. What's good?" Promptly after my friend asked the barkeep this question I sunk low into my cushy bar stool. If my Ranstead Room virgin-status wasn't already flashing above my head, that question kicked on the lights. The entrances - one branching from the slim alley that is Ranstead St. and one tucked in the corner of the adjoining El Rey's dining room - give the illusion of some fancy shmancey club where fresh meat isn't welcomed. Not the case. Even if cocktails aren't your area of expertise, you're in good hands with the pros at Ranstead Room. There was no need for me to be worried that my barstool would be revoked due to inexperience; David was sweet and gentle. The first drink he made me was not. But I kinda liked it. Next he made me one of his favorites: a Penicillin. I loved this drink. And I loved that he loved making it and I watched him dotingly practice his craft: chipping away at ice cubes to create the perfect fit for each glass; shaking my fourth drink as vigorously as my first, never tiring; garnishing each cocktail with its personalized flair. I was so content. I may have been lulled into euphoria not just by the drinks but by the dim-lit, dark-cloaked room and its super-chill ambience. Sexy red and black on the walls, booths and bar. Ranstead Room may not seem like a place for beginners, but I certainly enjoyed learning how to ride.

El Rio's entrance is deceptively unassuming--but as I walked through the bar's plain gray doors I was accosted by the bar's dynamic vitality. Packed but not stuffed, the bar hosted a lively crowd who were busily wetting their whistles and chatting with their friends as music blared in the background. Hosting a clientele from all walks of life this surprisingly large bar on Mission Street puts "happy" back in "happy hour". The just-off-work crowd captured the diversity of San Francisco's 20- to 40-something professionals with representatives from the financial district, local construction sites, Mission coffeehouses and even the drag scene. El Rio's Happy Hour runs from 5 - 9pm but on this hot evening draught beers were out of commission so my suds of choice were Red Stripes, an option I often overlook.
