I had not gone to a poetry slam in a long time and so when my friend told me about the Book Tour for the Domestic Crusaders, I was definitely in. I'm so glad I went because not only did I have a really delicious Hot Tea with Milk and Sugar, I got to listen to some really good poetry, monologues, and bits of the Domestic Crusader's play. The Nuyorican Poet's Cafe is a very comfortable, intimate space. There is a bar right as you enter and a small stage with chairs for about 80 - 100 people towards the back. There is also standing room upstairs. I went to the 6pm show, so it wasn't too crowded.

Great place, great decor, great atmosphere! Very loud however with pricy drinks. Still a must to check out! The girl dressed as a fairy pushing the Absthinthe cart is a pretty cool accessory. All employees (minus the security) totally dress the part of 1920's era gangsters and flappers, along with a lot of the bar's clientele. On the walls throughout the bar are clickering images of movies from the era, that I'm sure to most of us, not even your grandparents would remember! One drawback in the atmosphere setting I found was the music. If you go onto the bar's website, it showcases 1920s era and style cabaret music. But walking into the actual bar, is more like a disco/hip-hop/r&b club. Also, the club is a bit dark, with a well assortment of candlelight and odd looking light fixtures...but this should only affect those with bad eyesight (I actually found it quite elegant and soothing). Finally, there's the noise decibel level. Let me start off by saying this is not the type of place you want to go and have a quiet intimate conversion with someone. If you are sitting at a table with a bunch of friends, best bet, you'll either need a pretty loud voice or just simply yell. That'll get your message across! For the most part however, the conversations are best to those sitting right beside you. Alright, enough of my griping... If you are ever in the downtown area or just wanna get out for a night of fun without the same old boring club/bar atmosphere, definitely check out the Edison. Be sure to arrive early (around 9-ish) as the line backs up quite a bit and you could be standing for a while. Be sure to tip your waitress!

Went here for their New Year's Party and it was alright. $20 cover was not bad for a night where every other bar is $100++. And they might just have the most amazing Mango Mojitos I've ever had. Yum yum yum and quite potent. The bar itself is pretty big and has different sections to fit your mood - although I admittedly steered clear of the dreaded techno room. A few complaints: 1. Why does only the top bar take cards? Walking all the way up there to get drinks got to be a hassle - especially since my Mango Mojitos were only made downstairs. 2. One of the bartenders was EXTREMELY rude when I was trying to phish out money from my purse - I know it's crowded and stressful, but don't take it out on the patrons! She does get a half a point back though for realizing her mistake and apologizing later. 3. Where are the tall guys?? Am I destined to forever go to the Marina simply because the number of gentlemen over 6'0 in any other neighborhood is extremely limited? Tell me it isn't so, tell me it isn't so.
