So, there are several layers to this place: bar, restaurant, dance club, etc. This is about the restaurant. Great service. Great decor. You can see the chef through a window in the back, working over a flaming grill. Great drink list: extensive tequila selection, 26 margarita/mojito flavours (we had orange, peach, pineapple, and coconut). Corn chowder was especially good; our other food was good, but nothing to write home about. The guacamole is superb; they prepare it table-side, if you want. And kudos on the excellent cafe padre presentation at the end of the meal.

Ah, why do I love Sky AKA Spin, AKA Sky? 0) Go on the right night, and you'll see world class electronic DJs (Paul van Dyk, Gabriel and Dresden, Christopher Lawrence) spinning in the convenience of a club ONE MILE from my house. 1) Friendly crowds. If you like electronica in Austin, you're not likely to have a 'tude like clubbers in SF or NYC. 2) Cheap drinks. With $4 Red Bull & Vodkas, I've had trouble getting to the $20 minimum credit charge. It helps if you have friends you can buy drinks for. 3) No artificial lines. Unlike other clubs (you know who you are) Sky never makes you wait to make it look more popular. 4) Friendly crowds who actually dance. After seeing hipsters mill about the dance floor in NYC, in Austin, people are unafraid to dance. 5) Excellent sound system. Sky doesn't over-compensate a sucky sound system by over-pumping it--the sound system here is BUMPING---check out the bass bunnies. 6) Good layout for dancing. The dance floor looks occupied with as little as 30 people on it (which is key, as noone wants to be "that guy dancing with myself"), but can hold hundreds. 7) Friendly staff. Though the bar staff can get slammed, they are always patient. If you go on the wrong night or much before 11 pm, it can be totally dead. After midnight is usually when it gets bustling, though all bets are off depending on who's headlining. The sidebar is usually less crowded, and if the upstairs bathrooms are open, there's usually no line. My only peeve with Sky is their (failed?) attempt to rename themselves "Spin", which their banner out front says. Same staff as Sky, and I've heard they're back as Sky and saving their money for a new banner.

I must give props to Element for devoting their Saturday night to the gays, and I am more than thrilled that there's now a fun place to dance on Saturday nights besides the Roxy ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...). The party's called Bank, and it's a quality investment (hehe). The space itself is beautiful, and DJ Larry Tee keeps the party going all night long. Also be sure to check out "The Vault" in the basement a whole other dance floor, bar, and a much more relaxed, loungey feel. This is where the boys in the know are on Saturdays.
