by Yumee K. on We came expecting to experience the rooftop bar but it turned out that we were there just as a meeting spot. The outdoor area is gorgeous! But then thats all there is to it. The drinks are a little pricey but its worth the ambiance that is set. Hopefully on my next trip to new york, i'll have the chance to experience the rooftop/patio area.

I thought that I was over going to this place, but I guess when the theme of the birthday outing is "Bringin' it Back 2 da Old Skool," going here is pretty appropriate. The line is ridiculous, but thankfully I didn't have to deal with that. Within 10 minutes of getting in, I get half a drink spilled on me, but that was done by one of my friends (still, if I got a dollar for every drink spilled on me last night, I'd be able to buy me my own drinks...to spill on myself). And I completely forgot the habit of random guys trying to grind all up ons on the dance floor, but that's why you roll with your homies that will bail you out. What I've never realized is how HUGE the place is! I knew there were places upstairs, the outdoor patio, the large front area and what??!!? there's a back area too? How many bars are in this place? For what type of music they play, it's pretty good. Spinderella (The unnamed third of Salt N Pepa) was on the main stage spinning, which was pretty good (at least good enough to get me on the dance floor despite I was wearing the wrong shoes which tore up my feet). LOTS of floor to get your groove on, and seriously plenty of real estate to chill. I'd never make this place a regular haunt, as I'm more of a dive bar kind of girl for drinks and would hit a more chill place to dance. Not to mention I'm not too cool with the crowd that haunts the place. Getting in for free without waiting in line, good friends and enough booze will make for a great night...anywhere. And any evening when I wind up walking the streets barefoot with my shoes in hand, that means good times were had. Either way, Highlands isn't the worst place to go on a Saturday night (and you don't want me to get started on that)
by Stephen H. on I am sorry to say that I have to agree with Nan. I only give it fours stars, because there is simply so few Ethiopian choices here that any at all will get thumbs up. The biggest ding is for the injera, which is simply too bland. Where's that sour tang that I crave so! If you're ever out DC way, make sure to drop in on Salome. Another ding for the level of grease oozing out of the meat sambussa. The flavor was excellent, they simply need to drain off the fat before filling...The veggie sambussa were excellent. That said, here's the good news: The portions are excellent. My appetite is legendary, but I and a friend were unable to finish the sampler for two. The cabbage greens were better than I've had anywhere. All of the dishes were excellently flavored- if not for the injera (the most important part, of course), they would have gotten the last star. The bar is fully stocked- you can find most good bourbons. Jazz. Need I say more?
