by Jazzelyn F. on " I gotta get me some of this" . . . Were a few words I heard being mumbled behind me from a cute girl at El Rio last Sunday. First off, I'm straight but I was flattered so I let her freak me for a minute because quite frankly, it took me back to my Jr. High freak train days and for about a mili second I felt young again. ANDConsidering I have yet another birthday coming up these thoughts were much needed this past weekend. Andy and his salsa band were playing in the patio, your 8 dollar cover included free BBQ ( um, hello? is this not the greatest idea ever? ) and margaritas were being poured freely. We hung out for a couple of hours but in all honesty the BF and I could have probably stayed for a long time since they had all of the essentials. Drinks, Free Food, Music,Pool and a nice staff . . oh, and apparently, there was a raffle too and we didn't walk out of there winners but it was nice too know we could have . . . .
by Ramiro Losh on Once of my favorite places to go on a Saturday night. If you love house music, this is the place. Depending on the DJ for the night, the place can get crowed. People there are friendly and unlike those mainstream clubs, they're there because they enjoy the music. The place is pretty small with very limited chilling areas, so if your looking for a lounge, don't bother. There is however vip lounge areas right on the side and in front of the dance floor for a vip price. When do you want to chill, head out to the smoking area. Parking is very limited, so if you know of a secret spot, try there first. There's no dress code, and this place does not close till 4am. The drink however do stop at 2. Don't worry, the bartenders are very nice and generous, so I'm sure you'll get your fix to last.
by Patrick W. on Am I the only one who has succumbed to the fact that drinks just -are- expensive? Coming from LA where it seems to be becoming normal in the more elitist locations that martinis will be $17, $10 for a cocktail is actually reasonable for a premium outing location... and folks, this is Manhattan, which claims to be one of the most expensive cities in the world... relax! If you can't afford to drink at a bar, then drink in an alley before you go in. (or both, like me) I had a great time at Duvet. Someone warned me before pointing me in this direction on a Thursday that it was stuck up and kind of hoity-toity to be headed to for my first outing of the trip in Manhattan, but I went nevertheless. I found it to be a bit gritty from my LA frame of reference. No, it's not gritty at all, but NY just is kind of gritty in general in the best way possible. This was a polished version of NY's grit. People are eager to dance here! Thursdays are fun, because the gays hop to the dancefloor to a very eclectic mix. I felt as though I'd entered the stereotypical welcome to the city, as moments after landing I traipsed over, walked in, and Madonna's "I Love New York" was playing (mind you, this was days after the release of that album). Though I hated the song, I felt like me walking in at that moment was purely kismet. I ended up dancing on someone's bed table, getting to know them, and going to get sub-park diner food afterwards. This is a great bar with a great crowd. I had fun. Stop complaining.
