by leslie t. on My friends and I took a taxi to this club and got there around 10:30 on a Saturday night. We didn't have to wait in line because we put ourselves on the guestlist earlier in the day; it was only $5 if you got in before 11. So basically when you walk in there's coat check on the left and a bar on the right. The first floor is basically a lounge area with white couches and random salsa type music. No one was really dancing on this floor; people were just watching one another for potential pursuits haha. Downstairs they have both the "hip hop" room and an adjacent smaller dance room with "techno"? My friends and I stayed in the hip hop room, which reminded me of being in an underground cave. Most of the crowd ended up in this room. The music was so-so for me; they should really work on this. I feel like a lot the songs were slow R&B/hip-hop remixed to be faster, but it didn't work. highlights of the night: -random guy telling my friend that he "liked her style" while creepily coming up from behind -another random dude who aggressively grabbed my friend from the middle of our circle by the wrist several times even though she said no; luckily my other girlfriend managed to break his grasp. When he asked her if she was trying to start a fight (what a douche), my friend replied "she said no, show some respect!" :) He backed off. Overall it was an interesting night.
by Jesse W. on You know, this place already had two strikes against it when i walked in: it was a tapas bar (which I'm always a little lukewarm on) and that it featured loud, live music. But since I knew all that going in, I won't hold it against Loca Luna in this review. The wait for a table and the slow service, on the other hand, are not off the hook. Let's start with the wait. There is too much good food in Atlanta for me to wait 90 minutes to sit down somewhere, I can go to a zillion places on a Saturday that are delicious and I can walk right in and sit down. . . and they aren't filled with loud hipsters with bad haircuts. And once you've had the decency to seat me, it's time to make with the service. They didn't. The only thing that half-way saved this place was that it actually had pretty good food. The 5 of us ordered lots of different dishes and we all seemed quite pleased with our choices. Maybe try this place out during the week. . . maybe it will be easier to sit down and experience the good food they are serving.
by Glenn Proescher on The best thing about Tao is that huge Buddha in the back, but even that gets a little offensive after you think about it. This probably doesn't present any worries for the establishment because lunch hours continue to see a crowd. Damn you, Sex and the City! The service was slow and the pre fixe menu may seem like a good deal until you actually taste the food (plus, Chinese-American food is supposed to CHEAP. why am I paying $10 for spring rolls??) The peking duck spring roll is inedible. Since when did peking duck look like brown paste? The kung pao chicken is overly syrupy and sweet. I found myself gulping down the jasmine rice because that was the least overbearing item on my plate. The dessert - chocolate wontons - was slightly redeeming. In the end, it was a smart concept with poor execution. Amid the deep fried shells and vanilla ice cream, I could barely taste the chocolate. Tao is better off being just a bar with a faux-Asian theme. It'll still be tacky, but then no one judges alcohol by its authenticity.
