by aspasia s. on Cocomo is Potrero Hill's best kept secret (if not quite a secret), where salsa and Latin American groovin' is concerned. When I used to live by 'hood i would spent a few ladies nights out to escape the wrong marriage and get my footwork going. You will find the club populated by a varied clientèle from a socio-economic standpoint yet, all together bond by the energy of the latin beat. Prior to open dancing, a couple of hours before ten, you can join an intimate group and a couple instructors as they attempt to inculcate the basic steps. It's like a pre-open-sparring night - boxing instructors teach you the jab-cross-hook, the Latin instructors teach you the basic front-step-back-step moves with a little bit of subtle hip gyrations. The last visit was about a month ago with a kindred OG Ratecluber and my boxing girl - wow - boxing footwork with latino movements - made the evening! Post too much dancing workout and alcohol; one can grab a tamale or two, else a burrito, prior to hitting the sack.
by Darron Hendriks on what an experience! for the average yuppie, this place is like walking into the mambo kings while filming. the live bands are great, the crowd is eclectic and authentic at the same time, its a slice of life you dont see at your average club or bar. the security is serious, but it needs to be as there are problems outside a lot. seriously, dont let your girlfriend walk out there by herself. my friend lives across the st. some of the clientele is a little ... shall we say ...organized.
