by Brittany H. on I love 1 Oak and I'm pretty sure 1 Oak loves me. The guest DJ was banging, (a collection of house music) the space is undoubtedly la femme chic. It's a pretty scene, filled with all kinds of interesting people, given the night. The night was indeed completed with the accompany of my fabulous ladies. If you're not in love with this place, you're either one of two things... a hater...or this place is NOT your scene. Where do you fit in the picture? It is definitely one of the hot spots in the city...and shall remain that way for quite some time. And yes, of course, it's a little pretentious....it wouldn't be a lounge in the Meatpacking District if it weren't! I love it anyways!

Typhoon rolls are yummy, they've started a dollar night sushi thing two weeknights a week, which is really just a way to spend $8 on different rolls and try them out. The last time I went here, I went Thai (the menu has a Japanese side and a Thai side) and got the See-u, which wasn't bad, but I wouldn't travel all the way here for it. The service and the atmosphere are very nice. The bathroom is awesome; the sink is a freaking mini fountain. Rain also has cool mints. I've recently started trying their desserts, if you get dessert I recommend the coconut ice cream. Rain is conveniently located next to a Publix and the Tara theater. Go to rain. Get a bunch of sushi and split it with your friends. Win.
by Elton Boardwine on We went to Giant at Vanguard for the first and probably last time on Saturday night. When I heard Benny Benassi was in town, I knew we had to go. We saw him at Nocturnal Wonderland '07, but it was so crowded that we didn't get to see his entire set. This time we were determined to give it another try. Now that I've experienced Giant, I know why some people complain about the crowds. After one experience, I can honestly say that I hate Giant at Vanguard. I hate douchebags, wanna-be thugs, aggressive assholes, and creepy staring guys. I hate club girls in sequined dresses and high heels who spill their drinks all over you. I hate the girl who elbowed me with her aerobic-inspired "dancing." I hate the druggies and cokeheads who thought this was a rave. I hate every asshole who elbowed, pushed, and shoved us as we were trying to walk. If I had superhero powers, I would have turned 75% of that crowd into dust. Most of all I hate that we had to escape to the smoker's patio to breathe. The dance floor was unbearable after midnight. The opening DJ Joaquin Bamaca rocked it, and Benassi was good. He was good but not great enough to make up for the overall miserable experience. Unfortunately, we left before the extended remix of "Satisfaction," but we were able to catch his remix of "Bring the Noise." It was a fun night only because I was with friends. Otherwise I would have been cranky all night long. I love electronica, and I love Vanguard's sound system. Their sound system is the only reason I gave them 2 stars instead of one. I don't love them enough to come back on a Saturday night. Deep on Sunday night is the superior experience. Fuck Giant.
