It's in the Tenderloin. Duh, not a great area. But it's also within blocks of US DOJ, CA DOJ and Court of Appeal, Cal Supreme Court & the Civic Center. During the day, it's pretty safe, and although their onsite restaurant is closed for 6 months, there are lots of eateries nearby --but you might want to check their DPH inspection scores on http://www.sfdph.orgor http://www.cleanscores.... LIKED: Great rate (AAA); walking distance from Civic Center BART & gov't offices; *superb* customer service; clean rooms; QUIET at night; free parking in enclosed (though not gated) lot; free wireless Internet; free continental breakfast; beautiful heated pool; DVD players in many rooms (or you can borrow one, along with DVD movies); nice soap products; eco-friendly; lots of accessible power outlets; free pass to Kabuki spa DIDN'T LIKE: Low shower water pressure; room is COLD & heater is weak (but OK with a space heater you can borrow); you have to ask for hair conditioner (it's not automatically provided); no room safe; small, round glass table was not the best workspace OVERALL: Great for business travelers who just need a clean, quiet place to crash until the next morning. Not the best if you plan to stay out late, unless you have a car. Also not good for kids (because of the neighborhood). Join the Joy of Life club (free online) and they'll have an amenity of your choice (like bottle of water or split of wine) waiting for you. EXTRA TIP: Take advantage of JDV Hotels' free Golden Gate Greeter service. I did on a prior trip and had a blast. They aren't allowed to accept tips, so we treated our guide to dim sum.

North on Lincoln is a decadent club called, SET, which is touted as being the "premiere club for the jet set crowd" -The venue itself dazzles the eye with art deco splendor and contemporary uses of light, space, and sound. One feels transported back in time to a Miami millionaire's home in the 30s or 40s. Drinks are very expensive, a shot sets you back $15. The crowd is beautiful, dazzling, and international! I never left the dance floor. But I believe that was due to me being there with 3 beautiful italians from switzerland, meeting a couple australian blokes on the dance floor, as well as a young dutch couple who enjoyed taking turns dancing with me. What a night, what alcohol sodden memories were made. I don't remember ever going to the bar, or even sitting down. I am fairly certain that had I been sober going on, my review could have been a bit more jaded. Viva La Miami!

I almost lost my life here when I showed up wearing a Dodgers hat amidst Giants fans. Go figure. I've been to Mezzanine twice in 2007. I saw Common and Mos Def. The place was PACKED and about 99 degrees. Seriously, if you're not in the front of the club you better be at least 5'10" if you want to see who is on the stage. Luckily, they have a projection screen where you can see artists. The drinks were average for SF (about $8). I like this place because it consistently brings artists I enjoy and it's a medium-sized venue. It's located right off Market st so it's easy to get a cab or MUNI back home.
