"Wow! It's alot bigger than I thought it would be." (insert pun here) I am, of course, referring to the monstrous size of Nick's crispy tacos. I've had my fare share of tacos, but never like this. About the size of 1/2 a burrito, these crispy taco shells are filled to the brim with juicy and savory carne asada, chicken, fish or shrimp. And if you have it "Nick's Way" for an extra 95 cents, they'll slather it with guacamole...all sexy-like. Ooooh yeah, you know what mama likes. *food porn music plays in background* Bow chicka wow! I opted for one shrimp and one chicken taco. The chicken was tender and marinated in juices, along with pico de gallo and pinto beans. The shrimp taco was light and fresh, bundled with cabbage, onions and cilantro. The chips and salsa with guacamole was BOMB - they did not skimp on the guac. I only wish I had a second stomach, like cows do. Dammit. Wash it all down with an agua fresca (fresa/strawberry is my fave) and you've got yourself a multi-dimensional, meaty, crispy, crunchy, juicy meal that'll make you eat and lick your fingers like no one is watching. And as much as I wanted a $6 margarita, I was on my lunch hour so I did the grown-up thing and passed. The place gave me a feeling of deja-vu as I wondered, "Have I danced on that bar before?". Then, I realized Nick's is located inside Rouge nightclub. Oooh! It's all makes sense now. Sitting in the elevated red booths was an unexpected surprise, and a huge departure from the decor of a "traditional" Mexican taqueria - a decor which generally consists of posters of scantily clad Latinas in the arms of a muscular Aztec, Thalia album covers, and Modelo beer ads. If I lived closer and parking wasn't such a raging beeyotch, I'd come here more often. Nick's: Thanks for reinventing tacos in the most awesome way.

This has been my Thursday hangout for the last few months now. This place is usually packed and full of beautiful ladies on Saturday, but on Thursday its 50/50. I've been there when you can count the number of people inside on one hand and Thursdays where the crowd is like a Saturday. Its a pretty racially diverse crowd, bartenders are nice and the smoking room on the side is pretty roomy. The music there is hit or miss at times, so it all depends on what the DJ has on his list that night. If you're just looking for a nice place to kick it with friends and get your dance on I would recommend it.

My first visit to Bimbo's was a monumental one. If was a couple of weeks after 9/11, and I was miserable. The dot com I worked for (after being hired in August!) was going down in flames, and working in travel was just about the most painful and thankless occupation you could have. I was lucky enough to see Robin Williams to a benefit, and we had a front-row table. We're all familiar with his kinetic energy, but I wasn't having it. He was on, but I was not. Towards the end of the show, a woman a couple of table down from ours got up to use the restroom. He made some snarky remarks towards the women and their bladders, and then continued. At the end, he thanked us for coming, and the aforementioned woman's friend stood up, and said. "You can't go now - my friend's not back yet!" Mr. Williams looked at her, walked to the edge of the stage, got down on one knee and said in a calm manner, 'But Lincoln freed all the slaves." I let out a huge burst of laughter, and looked at me. It was a 'Damn - she finally succumbed to my powers of comedy!' look of triumph. I think it gave him reason to perform another 15 minutes. I've been to other concerts, even other Robin Williams events at Bimbo's. That one, is the one.
