OUTSTANDING VENUE FOR THE DARKER SIDE OF SAN FRANCISCO! SIT-REP *DIVE!  DIVE!  DIVE!*  [NO.  That is not a command with the KLAXON HORN alert indicating that a SUB is SUBMERGING, but rather the heads-up that we have entered the "DIVE BAR" ZONE! - Translation:  "A GREAT TIME is AHEAD!"] "WOW!"  I mean "WOW!"  This is truly one of the few venues that I have a SIGNIFICANT association with almost two decades long.  Which is why it is extremely humorous to me that this is my FIRST "Rateclub"-opportunity to actually write about it. THE SET-UP First came to CAT CLUB back in 1994 (that I actually remember - it may have been as early as 1990 when I first clubbed in SF, but as a passenger I was usually a bit discombobulated to actually know "where" I was since i trusted to my friends to get us around in those early days of my clubbing). The CAT CLUB is a DELICIOUSLY DIVY bar with wooden floors and walls in the SOMA (South Of Market Area) district of San Francisco.  It is basically two separate rooms that permits two separate DJ-dance parties to go on simultaneously.  It has vaulted ceilings (which are more pronounced in the front room) and has an air of spaciousness.  So though DIVY, it is NOT claustrophobic.  THIS adds to the place's charm. THE DRINKS ALWAYS a reason to come TO and come BACK TO the CAT CLUB: The outstanding drink specials!   On Thursdays, not only do you get into the club for free before 9:30pm, but there are $1 well drinks before 10pm!  You can't beat that ANYWHERE! CURRENT FUN First it was Thurs night's "1984" and THAT's when I became a huge fan of (and now am pals with) DJ DAMON BOYLE (his & Rachel's wedding remains a HIGHLIGHT of my SF experiences - including their reception @ CAT CLUB!)   I also became pals with then-owner Tony Carracci.  This led to even more familiarity with the venue and experimentation with their different (club) nights such as: * APOCALYPSO (3rd Fridays) with FANTABULOUS DJs SIX, STARR and CANDY absolutely ROCK the joint up in style with hottest DANCE & ELECTRO tracks.  Guest DJs like my pals KEVIN MILLER & NATALIE LIQUORI often fill out the roster.  MSSR BLANC takes AWESOME pics of attendees!  GO-GO Dancers!  Hell yeah! * GOSSIP (2nd Saturdays) with the awesome DJ MELTING GIRL and DJ DAMON BOYLE, playing the best Dark Wave 80s, EBM and Industrial-lite that you will enjoy! * STRANGELOVE (first Fridays) with DJ TOMAS DIABLO and rotating guest DJs, including my buddy DJ BRYAN HAWK from THE ASYLUM in Sacramento, CA.  This last Strangelove was a "Back-to-School" special and many girls were in their cute little school uniforms as per the theme.  A proud moment was getting my "Doctor of Goth" degree (I shit you not!) SIXXTEEN  (alternate Saturdays) enjoys a lot of electroclash, Brit Pop, Indie and many other great formats. TEMPTATION (alternate Saturdays) with DJs DANGEROUS DAN & SKIP!  It's one of my favorite nights that combines awesome dark gothic-industrial along great bitchen rock & roll.   Hearing Def Leppard, Billy Idol, Gary Numen, Joan Jett, VNV Nation, CombiChrist, etc., makes for a HELLUVA fun eclectic time! All these nights are STILL current rotation on the club schedule.  Cat Club has also hosted CANDY, HOT PANTS, and NEW WAVE CITY, other nights that have been raucous fun! WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE I also have to give props to two previous OUTSTANDING nights:  BONDAGE A GOGO (BAGG) used to be hosted here at CAT CLUB about a decade ago and that was a lot of fun with it's FETISH and GOTHIC-INDUSTRIAL dressed themes as well as the music. One of my all-time favorite nightswas ASSIMILATE every Friday (from 1998-2000) when long-haired DJ FERNANDO would spin the BEST in Gothic-Industrial-EBM and have cutting edge shows - both concerts & fashion.  One memorable night was meeting KRISTY THIRSK (Conjure One, Delerium, Rose Chronicles, etc.) as she performed solo tour. BAR & SECURITY STAFF In sum:  BEST in the business!  RANDY MAUPIN is an outstanding Bar Manager and makes us all feel like we at an incredibly fun house party.  With him in the front and ALTHEA in the back, great coverage.  LIESL remains my favorite bartender in SF, possibly WORLD - I love this gal like nobody's business!  MICHAEL CHESTNEY, STEVE WASHINGTON and their team are best security guys you'lll ever meet. I have to take a moment for my friend STEPHAN WILSON who passed away from medical complications at a young 40 this past year.  I first met him here at the Cat Club, though I've had the privilege of meeting him at other venues he also worked at.  He was a fun presence wherever he was and we, his friends, will miss him terribly... THE LOWDOWN Doesn't matter what night:  if you like your music to be fun, dance-oriented, with exceptionally talented DJs and a fun staff to take care of you, CAT CLUB is one of your best stops ANYWHERE in California!

Parking is $20 here I heard.. I've actually never parked right by Avalon itself. I usually get off the freeway, turn left on Vine St, and park in one of the side parking structures.. Granted, it's a few blocks away from the club, but the parking is only $10-$12 depending on which one you go to. It's not all that far of a walk, but if you're a girl and you're in skimpy clothes (which is probably likely since you're going to a club), you'll get lots of stares and an occasional remark as you walk down the street. The first time I went clubbing was at Avalon.. I've been back a few times since and I still enjoy it. I've never drank here either (: The ladies' room is relatively clean, with an attendant there all the time. The bouncers are super friendly (then again it could be because my friends & I are girls..), and I like the crowd most of the nights I've been here. The one problem I have with them is how long they make you wait in line.. The first two times my friends & I went, we weren't on any kind of guestlist and we just stood in line. Well we got there around 9:20 with the flyer, by the time we got in it was almost 11. I don't know why that is but the line was barely moving. We showed our "$10 before 10:30" flyer to the girl at the ticket booth, and she stared blankly at us and said in a very very rude tone, "um, it's almost 11." This happened again the second time, except we barely missed the 10:30 deadline. For some reason it feels like the girls selling the tickets are always PMSing.. Maybe they hire them so they'd enforce the price more, I don't know. I just think if someone misses the time by a few minutes they should just give the price to them, instead of the shift from $10 to $25. Or, the people should just be nicer about it..

This is a great place to see a show.  (LCD Soundsystem rocked.) There are several small bars located around the mostly square space.  This kept the crowd from getting too congested. There's a lovely mezzanine (of course) that provides a cool perch to crowd watch.
