I went opening night to check out Haute- home of the old Apple. It was exactly like Apple- I swear nothing changed. The drippy wax ledges in the courtyard were kinda cool- but other than that... it wasn't anything special. "The Hollywood Clique" (lamest promoters) were promoting that night and only let girls in. I swear it was estrogen overload in there! I'm not kidding when I say that the women to men ratio was 10:1. Seriously annoying. AND the GIRLS that were there- were first and second year college students with fake ids. The upstairs VIP area was not handled well... You're supposed to get a hand-stamp to gain access, and some of our group didn't get them out of error, and it turned out to be a huge hassle. I'm sure they'll work out the kinks in the system- but I hoped for better. The music in the upstairs area was pretty crappy and they had dancers come including Legacy from So You Think You Can Dance... It was nothing to write home about. I miss the days when Thursdays at Villa were still good. :( I wasn't a fan of Apple, and I'm not a fan of Haute. Like anywhere in Hollywood, if you don't want to wait in a line- make sure you get on a promoter's list. I still think Matt & Sean are the best Hollywood promoters around. I don't know why I go anywhere unless they're running the show. Note to self: When it comes to having a good time in Hollywood- if its not Matt & Sean- forget it.

i may have finally broken my bad show karma. for the first time in a while, i wasn't surrounded by falling down drunk frat-holes and was in one of the most courteous and gracious audiences i've encountered at an l.a. show. and the folks who rocked out to "video killed the radio star" made the preshow wait a lot of fun. i thought i wouldn't like the assigned seating, but i LOVE it. i don't have to wait in line for hours before doors opening. i don't have to worry about douchebag teenagers sitting down on the ground between acts. i don't have to worry about six foot tall guys elbowing me. i have personal space. love it! i was at the stars show that jessica l. was at and the show WAS that good and the venue made it even better. a surprisingly intimate venue. from a cursory scan of the non-balcony section, i would venture to say there are very few bad seats in the place. an artist playing a show here would actually encourage me to buy a ticket, as opposed to an artist playing at the wiltern, which makes me run for the hills.

4, for the dancefloor, and the drinks. Go with friends, meet with people, dance until 2am on mainstream music. The kind of recipe that works. Typical SF dynamic: locals on week days / B&Ts and drama on weekend's.
