by Michelle B. on I went in on a random weekday and was disappointed because I was expecting all the burlesque kinda stuff and hot girls and there was none of that. There was a decent band playing and 1 girl bartender who was dressed in very regular clothes (no fancy lingerie or corset) so not what I was expecting at all.
by Ezekiel Bohlmann on I've not been to Cielo in awhile so when I stepped in on Sunday to hear Junior Vasquez spin for a bit I remembered just why I love this place so much. Cielo is always consistently excellent. The sound, the lighting - everything. They have an amazing sound system which will knock your socks off and keep you dancing for hours. The Wednesday party at Cielo is probably one of the best in the city and brings together a collection of former Sound Factory and Paradise Garage denizens who love the groove - if you've not been make an effort because it is fierce. I don't understand why people complain about standing in line at Cielo, I've never had to stand in line at this club, not once. Look the part and you won't have a problem, it's the same way at every club in New York. Once you come here enough and they get to know you the staff may give you a "Star Card." This card is a gift from the gods - it gives you and a friend line-jumping privileges and free entry (yet another reason I love Cielo - I don't have to pay to get in!!) I really, really love Cielo. I know that when I'm feeling a bit down or worn out from school I can always swing by here and listen to some kick-ass music and dance my ass off. While the rest of the meatpacking district has gone to hell Cielo maintains its dignity and stands as a bastion of fierceness.
by Steph P. on Holy cow, Club Waziema is home to some of the best deals I have come across in SF: Deal #1: Mon-Saturday from 6-10pm: $9 All You Can Eat Veggie Combo You get a portion of every veggie item on their menu (split peas, lentils, collard greens, mushrooms, and "vegetable stew" comprised of potatoes, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes) x infinity! Resist eating up all the soaked-up injera at the bottom, or you will likely commit the cardinal sin of AYCE dining - not getting seconds. The service here was really great and was totally cool with us ordering a second helping of our favorites (the split peas, lentils, and mushrooms). Overall, the flavor was ehhh...pretty bland, which is quite a let down for characteristically piquant Ethiopean fare. More bland than New Eritrea http://www.rateclubs.com/bi..., but better in my opinion, than Massawa http://www.rateclubs.com/bi.... Standout dish: the creamy split peas. Don't bother wasting stomach space: the vegetable stew. How is it possible to have hard potatoes in a stew? No flavor and reminded me of a horribly misguided potato salad. Also, their injera did not have much tang to it, with the texture a bit dry and flat (rather than spongy). Deal #2: The concurrent Happy Hours from 6-8pm where all beers on tap are a mere $2.50. Pretty decent selection to choose from. The restaurant itself is also welcoming for a group of people, feeling more like a spacious pub than a restaurant and with a pool table in the back. The service was very friendly and prompt as well. Take a gander at the jukebox, with its eclectic-bordering-on-awesomely-bad selection. If you can deal with 3 star food (I have yet to try the meat dishes, so maybe it's more like 3.5?), check out Club Waziema with some friends and take advantage of the cheap beer and eats.
