by Inga I. on This place had some great dj's Sunday night. GREAT old school hip-hop and reggae!!! Every song that was played was just as good and the next song, Fugees, Tribe Called Quest, Beenie Man, I could go on and on! I had a great time with my friends, it took us back to the good ol' days of hip-hop :)
by Ryan F. on Red House Lounge leaves me torn. I like this place, but there are things about it I can't stand. For example: I came here with some friends for drinks after a birthday dinner at Stortini. The place has a great patio, so we grabbed a picnic table and waited for service. The waiter came up to my friend Karen, looked her up and down, then scowled at her and walked off! Needless to say, she was furious. She wanted to leave, but the birthday girl didn't want to drive anywhere. So I told Karen I'd buy her a drink if she stayed. Then I went inside and things got weird. I walked up to the bar and ordered a sangria for Karen and a Maker's Mark and coke for myself. The bartender poured the sangria, and noticed he was out of Maker's when he went to pour mine. Most bartenders would have substituted Jack Daniel's at this point, but not this guy. He proceeded to run down their list of bourbons and make suggestions of which would pair best with coke. Then he cut me a deal on a Knob Creek and coke because he was out of Maker's. And then he wiped the bar down before handing me my credit card slip so I could sign it on a dry surface. And he poured my drink strong. I was blown away - after our terrible treatment outside, it was like I had stepped into bizarro world. Perhaps the door to Red House Lounge functions as an air lock separating stellar service from abject douchebaggery. The bartender gets five stars for great service, but the classless outdoor waiter knocks it down to three. Subtract another star for high prices: even though the bartender cut me a deal on the KC and coke my tab still came out to $14 for two drinks. If Red House Lounge lowers its drink prices a bit and gives that waiter a Clockwork Orange style attitude adjustment, I might like the place more.
by Tommy Mysinger on My favorite venue in San Francisco! It mostly is because my favorite bands are electronic/indie...but oh, how I love dancing at the Mezzanine! The Security guys are really nice and the staff is also very friendly. The crowds are chill and cool...I saw my first hip hop show, MOS DEF, last week and oh, it couldn't have been better! The boys in the crowd were so *awesome*-participatory and respectful and just plain fun. (Props to the guy wearing his "I hella (heart) Oakland" shirt) Some of my favorite shows since I've moved to the Bay last year: Hot Chip (Nov. 06), Grizzly Bear, Fujiya & Miyagi, Patrick Wolf, and Mos Def Be warned, photographers-the management is pretty serious about their NO Cameras policy..and if you manage to sneak one in and they catch you taking pictures, the security isn't shy about confronting you about it!
