Today's lunch at Maggiano's was totally surreal. One hostess greeted us, another seated us, two waiters came over (one 'helping'), then another 'helper', then another, then the original, then someone from the kitchen brought out our food, then some sort of manager, then the original. So we had four waiters in all and dealt with 9 total staff, but only one waiter ever came to the table more than once, and everyone became progressively wavier and indistinct as the meal continued. At least the manager was able to explain why waves of fatigue were crashing over me like there'd been roofies in my soup. I could barely sit upright and form the words, but I managed to speak while supporting my head with both hands: "What is with this gnocchi? I'm suddenly.. so... tired." Blurry manager: "Oh, yes, the gnocchi! It does that to me too. Ha ha! Would you like some coffee?" Dude. Some of us have to go back to work and be productive. If I'd wanted to be passed out at noon I would have *taken the day off*. I especially don't want to be drugged and sold an antidote at lunch. It's lucky I didn't have a meeting after: I could barely stay conscious to handle the agenda I'd set for lunch. Shouldn't at least one out of our four waiters have mentioned that I was about to mainline some potato soma? Drugged by potato pasta. For real. At this point I should say that I'm sure I didn't hallucinate or dream the 3 extra waiters: my co-workers saw them too. How was the gnocchi? Bland, would not order again, The sausage orzo soup was much better (it came out first, so I was awake for it), and my co-worker was very pleased with his baked ziti; that'd be my choice if I went back. I don't do heroic doses of caffeine lightly, but I knocked back two cups of strong coffee, splashed some water on my face, and staggered back to my desk to try to prepare for tomorrow's client visit. I like the restaurant and will go back, but I hope my next bowl of pasta doesn't make me, like, really itchy all over, or able to move around only by hopping.

everyone has an opinion. it's true! i mean, f*ck, i use rateclubs. of course i want you all to know what i think. but, as far as i am concerned, i think the ear inn's burger is not good. i like burgers; i eat them whenever they are available, especially if everyone raves. raves including but not limited to; best burger in new york, best burger ever, best burger on the west side, etc. so, i came all the way from brooklyn to go to lunch here. it's WAY over on the west side, and contrary to what the map says, the ear inn is not technically INSIDE the holland tunnel. i order the legendary burger and while i wait, i take in the old OLD bar, dusty ephemera and quite a few business lunch drinkers. i like the bar part. i love old things. dusty old man bar spaces. burger came. man alive. dry. boring. NOT medium-rare (i.e. no bloody juice). i didn't finish it. that's saying something. so, i guess people like this place, but i am not one of those people.
