by Jen T. on I wanted to come here mostly because it opened a couple weeks prior to my visit and I'm a sucker for anything Food-Network-related (I'll admit it). I got the LA burger, which comes with avocado relish, watercress, cheddar cheese, and tomato. I also split sweet potato fries and a mocha kahlua vodka spiked milkshake with my friend. The burger was not bad, but the avocado relish was really just guacamole. For the size of burger, it should've been half the price (not $7.50). The sweet potato fries were tasty and a huge portion for $3 and well-worth it. We had a view into the kitchen while they were making the drinks, so I would NOT recommend getting the margarita, since it essentially comes out of a slushy-like machine. The milkshake was okay, but again, way overpriced. It's self-serve seating and the servers are pretty friendly/helpful. Overall, if you like "gourmet" burgers or the idea of eating at Bobby Flay's restaurant, it's worth a try, but not really worth it for the price & quantity.
by Mohammad Lauser on Just to give you an idea of what a night out at the Academy is like, I will tell you about the awesome thing that happened the last time I went. My friends and I were on the dance floor, moving to the sounds of some great DJ (they're always good at the Academy). It was sweaty but "good sweaty" and the end of the night was approaching. I took a look around and smiled at the hipsters, nerds, couples, Academy volunteers, and dancers that surrounded me. This is what San Francisco is all about. When the DJ began lowering the volume of his music to let us know the fun was just about done, my friends and I starting chanting, "Science! Science! Science!" I don't know what came over us but I think it had something to do with the wine and the numerous Weezer-style eyeglasses. Anywhere else, people would have rolled their eyes, scoffed or told us to shut up. But on this night, at the Academy, the entire dance floor chanted along with us. And so, that night, we merrily exited at 10 p.m. sharp, stomping to our nerd chant. Pure magic. Go to the Academy.
