by Brenton Mahar on I don't pay covers to dance on weeknights so I'll only be talking about the weekend here. This place is okay. You'll never be completely disappointed, but there will be no life affirming explosions either. This is a hive for people who are perfectly middle of the road, no dudes, but certainly no hipsters. As far as the music goes, it's sort of a constant tease. You may hear some Rob Base or Bobby Brown, but then you'll have to suffer through 'ironic yet ultimately safe' hits as 'Living on a prayer' and 'Pour Some Sugar On Me.' Also, there is no doubt you will hear 'Hey-Ya' and people will still get excited like it's still 2003. Only here. Think of same pretty good wedding soundtrack going here every weekend.
by L E. on This bar was a major disappointment. When my friend got punched in the face (after being there for less than 15 minutes and before anyone could get one drink) by one the the regular "thugs" that hang out there, he was blamed by the management. I got pushed out the way very forcefully and when I exclaimed to my friends that the guy who pushed my was an "#$$", he came after me. Turns out if you are the owner of the Greatest Bar... you can push any of your customers without apology and then ensure that your bouncers man-handle them from your club (mind you- I'm a small woman, there was no need for any pushing at all). THEN- when our group of friends was waiting for the cops, and to go to the ER because his face was split open, the owner again came after me and had to be restrained by his own bouncer so that he did not punch me! This is all because I stood up for myself when I was pushed by a man. If you want to go to bar that is owned by someone like that- someone who does not care if his customers are taken care of- then this is the place. Personally, VOX or Cast n' Flagon have a better crowd and nicer management.
by Lisa L. on As already noted, it's not really fair to review Mezzanine based on one night - I can definitely see that it would change based on the clientele. So I promise if I ever go there again, I'll amend my review ;) Anyway, went to see Angie Stone last night. The actual "Angie Stone and her band performing" part was great, really wonderful. However, everything leading up to that was not so great, and I don't know exactly why. The vibe was just strange. There were two opening acts who were lackluster at best, and the crowd was filled with my favorites...aggresive dancers and trustafarians. I'm about 5"1, so of course I want to be as close to the stage as possible, but I'd like to think that I'm pretty respectful of other people's space - no pushing, no standing in front of someone shorter than me, etc. Sadly this is not a universally-recognized policy. The strangest thing happened when Angie Stone came on - the crowd really mellowed out and the space close to the stage where we had landed cleared out a lot. In terms of the space, it's a good size but there is an annoyingly-placed pole in the center of the room that definitely blocks the view of the stage. The sound system was pretty good but there was definitely some distortion. As already noted, there were plenty of bathroom stalls and they remained pretty clean throughout the evening - definitely a plus. Getting in and out of the club was painless - no really long lines or crazy bouncers. Anyway, if they have another concert I want to go to or a dj that I like, I'll be back...and try to reconsider!
