I was visiting friends who are Ga natives, and they said that I had to eat at The Varsity. We were starving after walking around all day at the CNN headquarters and World of Coke, and scarfed down some chili dogs and onion rings. YUM. Best onion rings I've ever had by far. They are HUGE and flaky, melt-in-your-mouth onion rings. The chili dog was also tasty. Yummy! According to the locals, this is a popular haunt for Georgia Tech students - I can see why!

Unlike the apparently poikilothermic population-at-large, I don't prefer summer over winter for ice cream consumption. Nonetheless, I was expecting a welcome diversion in this 100 degree weather. Unfortunately, judging by the taste and texture, Amy's buys store-brand ice cream in half gallon boxes from HEB grocery stores and tries to pass them off with the tired old mix-in "novelty" that Cold Stone has used to achieve the pinnacle of mediocrity. As far as I can tell, Amy's has survived solely by milking "locally owned" status and underdog sympathies; a superior product can be found in your local freezer aisle.

If you've been to Bimbo's, then you know. If you haven't, find yourself a Friday or Saturday night and grab some friends and go. This is the sort of place where it almost doesn't matter who the band playing is, it's still fun. There is something for everyone. There are two great bars -- one in the back of the main room, and one in a side room for those who just want to drink and talk, and don't care about the entertainment. If you do have some sort of passion about the band you're there to see, then I suggest getting there early and getting a table, which makes this place EXTRA civilized. I'm not sure if there's a reservation system, but my guess is that a 20 in the right place can double as a reservation. If you don't have a table, fear not, as usually you can practically walk right up to the front of the stage and shake your money maker inside of spitting distance from the heroes in question. Bimbo's books a great line-up of bands who play here... sometimes people on their way up (it's about a 1000 person venue) to the Fillmore, or sometimes legends on their way down. They also have their "house" bands like Super Diamond who play there regularly. Minus 1 star for having a bathroom attendant. I hate having to think about whether (and how much) a tip is appropriate when I'm emptying my bladder. For me, it's like the "paper or plastic" question at the grocery store. Either way, you feel let down. In this case, you either feel bad for being a scrooge, or you feel bad for feeling manipulated. Can someone set me straight on this one? Do I have this wrong?
