I heard a lot about Tao before I went there, so I had high expectations. When I walked in, I was immediately overtaken by the club atmosphere - not what I had in mind. I was also disappointed with the placement of the some of the Buddhas and the pictures of the monks downstairs near the bathroom. That said, the first thing I noticed about the food was the soy sauce. It tastes like a little bit of spice was added to it that separates it from your typical kikoman Japanese soy sauce. For me, this was a nice surprise, but I don't think everyone would enjoy it. Normally, I order fried rice as a side dish and it blends into the rest of the food, but the lobster fried rice stood alone. And I know Tao is a top restaurant, but I still expect places like this to screw up something as simple as rice. But, they didn't. It was cooked just right and the lobster made it even better. The sushi dishes, on the other hand, were missing something. I don't remember which rolls we ordered, so they weren't terrible, but they weren't memorable at all. The only thing I do remember was that the sauces/extras that accompanied the sushi overwhelmed it. I don't think I'll go back to Tao unless I have a good reason. NYC is just too big to waste time waiting for places to improve.

This is a really cool bar. I just feel sorry for the bartenders. All those mojitos and other silly shaken not stirred drinks that take 4EVAR to make. I just wanted a beer. Lots of places to sit/lean which is super awesome because I hate standing.

Total Domination. On a Sunday night, it's pretty damn exciting to find a completely empty bar of which you and your friends can totally dominate. We were loud, we were drunk, and we really got to know the space. Scorpion bowls happened. They were tasty. Beers came in at some point. Also (probably) tasty. There was dancing, singing, talking... oh yes... and even role playing... :) Our bartender was very friendly... but very tired (i sure hope he got some shut eye that night)... and well... good times were had by all. Sunday evening... want something low key and practically empty (cross fingers)... try the upstairs bar at Hong Kong... there's an awfully good chance that you too could totally dominate.
