I go out of my way to avoid this place on Saturdays simply because the people are wack, the music's wack, and before I know it, my weekend ends up all wack. So with that in mind, I'm going to limit my review to Thursday nights - the Rootdown nights- which are unwack. There isn't a lot of negative stuff that I can say about Rootdown nights. First of all, it's a Thursday night so it isn't too busy which isn't all that bad. I just hate having to contort my body every which way as I'm walking through the masses. I don't like people rubbing up against me and I'm sure everybody else feels the same way. Second, the djs - Miles, Expo, Jedi, and etc. - are solid. It isn't that top 40 s*it, so don't expect to hear the latest from any rapper whose name starts with Lil. In fact, you may hear funk and underground hip hop in one room, while in the other room you might hear cumbia and some reggae. You just never know. As far as the crowd goes, you'll see a wide array of people ranging from the early 20's college crowd to some young professionals who are in their early to mid-30's. The cover's affordable at $5 (before 10:30), the drinks are decent, and you don't really have to dress up (jeans and a t-shirt will suffice - my usual uniform). The only thing you have to worry about is the parking. Spots are readily available on the street (residential) if you get there early, but expect to walk quite a bit if you get there after 11. You can always valet it. The Rootdown is definitely My Thang! Hit me!!!

if you dig retro kitsch, a heated pool, and free parking.... this is the place to stay. countless evenings with a gaga la of bikini clad beauties in/out of my room post/pre pool-time.... heaven. loved my stay, and the phoenix is officially my exclusive place to stay when i am back home in the bay. staff is great too.

This place sucks. Get a new sound system already! Who wants to hear that loud music through your tired ass speakers? Jeez.
