by Joey C. on Pretty good place to dance to electronica/pop-rock/80s/90s music...hardly any current songs though, so if you're used to the hip-hop top 40s scene, you probably will have a totally different experience. I am a hip-hop/top 40s scene kid when I go to the clubs, but I did manage to dance to some of the music playing. The crowd looks good and the people are very diverse. I came on a Saturday night on my birthday because I wanted to try a different scene out from what I was used to. Had to pay a pretty pricey cover charge at $15 bucks probably because of the DJs and performers that performed that night. They had the Designer Drugs DJs from New York who were super awesome. The Airborne Toxic Event performed that night too, and then DJ AM suddenly began DJing after The Airborne Toxic Event performed. It was a good night, yup. At least I could say DJ AM DJ'd my birthday! YAY!
by Angela G. on Have an open mind? Then, I would recommend go to the Box and go for the shows.. went on a Wednesday - got there just before midnight, really quiet night, which is how I prefer it. Had an absinthe cocktail by the bar before going in to the stage/seating area, ordered a bottle of champagne and sat down to watch a show. Saw this Billy Idol character come out of the stage, he sang & entertained the patrons, he was the host of the show. Then eight girls come out and sort of undulated around him, they were all topless. Imagine that Robert Plant video, but funnier. The act was much more natural then let's say Crazy Girls in Vegas. Less scripted and more raunchy, kitschy. The next act was a little crazy, please be forewarned now. A guy with fake boobs came out on stage, thought when he took of his top it would be a padded bra but no, this guy had gotten platic surgery to get himself a set (but he did not look pretty like the "girls" in Thailand that are really boys but look like women) it was interesting because he was obviously a guy in drag with huge fake..Next he took of his bottoms, so now he's completely naked, with a wee, little thing waving around while he's struttin and singin. Next....he er sits on a bottle, yes, up his you know what and then worse, finale, he takes the bottle from his a$% and puts it in his mouth. Yes, it's really, really gross and depraved but really, really interesting to watch at the same time. You can't help but be like.... WTF? Am I drunk or did I just really SEE that?? Yes, I really saw that and yes, I recommend The Box. Disclaimer: If you're not into wall to wall model/entertainment types that probably don't work the next day, then don't go. I'm definitely not that type and have/hold a day job but I still adore The Box, it's fun, and not your typical boring, bottle service club.
by Shu Laforte on What do I really need to say about Cielo that hasn't already been said a thousand times? This is the best place in town for house, techno, electro, and all forms of electronica. Cielo was the beacon of hope for technophiles during the dark days after Twilo closed in 2001, through the hip-hop days of the early 00s. Now that Techno and house is back in NYC, Cielo remains the place to go for top-notch DJs, a great vibe, and one of the best sound systems in the city. The best nights to come to Cielo are nights when big name DJs are playing, especially on Thursday nights. Those are the nights that generally attract fans of the music who want to hear the DJ playing that night. Cielo's week-end nights are usually pretty missable, being populated mostly with scenesters, euro-trash, and B&T, which makes it a massive pick-up scene. On better nights, the velvet rope is really easy to navigate, but on the sceney nights, you might be waiting a while. I'd like to see the drinks get a little more affordable ($12 for a G&T, $5 for a water!), and I'd like to see a little more discretion used at the door (both in terms of quality and quantity of people: send the scenesters up to Home maybe). But that aside, Cielo is really the best place in the city for top-quality dance music. When the music is good, the expensive prices and sometimes annoying crowd fade right into the background as you let the music take you over...
