I like National Mechanics just fine, but it's something like 2 places in one. If you like Old City trendbot haunts, don't bother showing up until 10 pm on Saturday, after the DJ and the rest of the bridge and tunnel crowd shows up. If you're a real person, you're safe to show up earlier. For you, the problem is that compared to other gastropubs around the city, NatMechanics is either pricier, worse, or both. The service has also been pretty terrible both times I've visited, receiving incorrect orders and/or vapid vacant stares. That said, the food is all serviceable-to-above-average, and the veggie burger is great, but if I'm going to be choosy about eating out, it wouldn't be my first choice (see Royal Tavern for that one, with better food, better service, more options, and cheaper drinks). There are three exceptions worth mentioning. First is the veggie burgers are tops, and the $9 burgers (veggie and otherwise) are $6 before 7 pm (on weekdays, I believe), which makes them much more worthwhile and a good after work spot. Second is that, for gastropubs in Old City, there are only a few options, so if you're there and hungry, NatMechanics is a worthy place to go (better than Eulogy, at least). Finally, the owners are stand-up dudes and do quite a bit to support Independents Hall and the Philly tech scene, so they should be commended for that. So if I'm in Old City and it's before 7 pm on a weekday or I'm really hungry, I'll hit up National Mechanics. Otherwise, I'll head somewhere else. I mean, there's a recession on, and a guy's gotta be choosy about where to spend his cheddar.

An Irish pub with bartenders who can make a mean mixed drink is a valuable find. And my beer drinking friends really seemed to enjoy the beer selection. 80's night on Saturdays is fun. The place fills up pretty quickly with all types of people - older, younger, black, white, couples, groups of friends, and singles. My dance skills aren't great, but 80's night here seemed to be more about fun, not style. Coat check is $2, but don't bother. Just leave your coats on the long bench against the back wall (but do remember to keep an eye on them, as people tend to like to dance up there as well). They say that they begin charging a cover at 10pm on Saturdays. Don't believe it. Some nights it's 9:45pm. Sometimes it's 10pm. Not cool. If, as a business, your policy is to start charging at 10pm , you should stick to that. And the guy at the door was pretty rude about it too. (Here's a hint for the under 21 crowd - the doorperson forgot that he checked our ID's already, and instead of asking to see them again, he just believed us when we said he'd seen them. )

You know how in Stranger Than Fiction they fall in love over chocolate chip cookies? Will Ferrell chews them antagonizingly slowly, lips smacking ever-so-subtly with that dreamy, faraway look in his eyes. His eyes close, and he lets this deep breath go, like he's in heaven and he's in love with an angel. That's how I feel about San Francisco Bakery's pastries. I usually can't stand flaky pastries-- croissants, turnovers, palmiers, danish-- hate 'em all. I used to think flaky pastries were for weenies. But the shiny, crispy coating on the San Fran danish changed my mind forever. I saw it and couldn't resist ordering an apricot one. The pastry part is consistently light, not too flaky (can eat this in one of my power suits without worrying), and brushed with something to give it that perfect crisp. I've sampled little bits of the rest of the menu too, and have continued to be bowled over by the food and service every single time since. Bread is superfresh (baked on site), as are the veggies, and the soups and salads are perfectly prepared. My favorite detail are the ultra-thin slices of picked carrots you receive on some of the sandwiches. SO GOOD. Oh, and their cookies? Just wait till you try them. They make you channel Will Ferrell in that one sweet moment. Seriously like nothing I've ever had in Austin-- I'd want them to expand to my downtown 'hood, but I fear food this great may only be attainable in small batches. I am, however, willing to travel. I also fear that this review has turned mushy, despite my efforts to keep it fresh, crisp and delicious like San Fran's food. Maybe this is what love is like...Maggie Gyllenhaal, is that you? What's that? I'm being audited? Oh, snap!
