I despise Olde City but when I am forced to go there I like to visit this place, as long as it's not on one of their busy weekend nights. I first came here for their Belle and Sebastian dance night and since then have noticed National Mechanics tend to draw in a crowd with many a-theme nights. Last night was Stevie Wonder night in which their drag queen host tried to organize a dance-off. Didn't really work with it being a Monday. Not to mention dancing to Stevie Wonder is like Stevie trying to walk with his good eye. But this place has a lot of seating, nice staff, and okay food. But just okay. It's a good place to go if a group of friends or a date are trying to have a quick beer.

"We have no dress code but a strong preference for tutu's and wigs." How do you not love this place? I arrived all hopped up on cookies & mojitos. I'm not sure the one drink that I ordered could even qualify as an adult beverage. It was watered down cola in a Dixie cup but I had probably already had enough as it was. We lingered near the bar area, got the giggles and stuffed our faces with some cream puffs. They are really cool about bringing in your own food. As I've been dubbed the cupcake lady, that's an A+ in my book. The Rock'N'Roll Camp for Girls was holding an event in the back. We made our way through the patio, got our hands stamped and entered into one of the event areas. The music varied and I give every one of them props for getting up there and putting on a show. As a crowd, we were entertained and there was an un-deniable presence of happiness. If you weren't rockin & rump shaking with the rest of us, you need to get your pulse checked. The patio area looked amazing. We didn't have enough time to fully experience it, as I had to get back to BART. I love that they have the ability to keep the events separate from the people looking to just chill and have a drink. If I find myself in or near the mission and I want to feel accepted, embraced, welcomed and happy - I'll make my way to El Rio.

Le Club would be great if it was still living up to the hype of its opening but unless you are here for a private party, most of the times you'll walk in and think 1. I thought they had a dress code 2. Where is everyone? 3. Ooh leather couches. I want to have my birthday party here. A billiards room should really be the chance to make a style statement in my book - a la Library at the Hudson Hotel in NY. The one at Le Club is odd -incongruous to the style of the rest of the club. If you are thinking of Old World, dark wood, nice lighting - no, sorry friends. Cozy up around the sad little bowl of peanuts while the strains of "Hey Mickey" bounce off the walls. I found that some servers seem a little unstable. They will go from that overly fawning, obsequious, any-you'd-like but then can snap or crumble. Yeah hon, you've had a long night, but I worked a long day before I got here and the last thing I need is Sybil serving me a drink. Also, the previous poster that mentioned the waitress all over one of the patrons; I noticed one of the servers doing that to a guy that was nearly motionless as his body waged war with that night's alchohol. I asked someone sitting next to me about the sudden leap in the job ladder of server . . .to? "Oh," he said, "she's doing, what you call it? Relations." "Oh," I nodded as if I understood but simultaneously did not let my brain process the idea further. "Relations."
