UPDATE: One of the owners of Vertigo contacted me and wrote a very nice email even though I didn't give his bar the best write-up. I am a huge fan of good customer service and am impressed by the management response. Also, I realize that in my original review below, I neglected to mention the nice and helpful staff as well as the many tasty concoctions they efficiently serve. The bouncer(s) are also friendly! :) So I'm not changing my rating yet but plan to return to Vertigo in the near future and see what there is to see... -------------------- I went here on Friday night for Halloween ready to break my cowboy boots in! I had been once before during the summer for a girls night out and I was hoping my second time around would be a better experience. However, with the exception of some holiday decorations, everything at Vertigo was identical... Positives: -central location -no cover on regular nights (it was just $5 on Halloween) -cool variety of disco balls decorate the dance floor -easy street parking (I've never had to park more than a couple blocks away) -crowded, so you know it's popular Negatives: -crowded...so crowded one care barely walk or dance or even move -poor ventilation -excessive amounts of broken glasses/bottles on the ground -cash only -DJ is just...eh...not bad but not definitely not great My final verdict: Vertigo is an overall decent local bar but is way better for grabbing a quick drink than it for hanging out or dancing or closing out a night on the town. But come on down if you enjoy feeling like a squished sardine while listening to random mixes of Nelly and Journey (together? really??) and of course don't forget bring your big wad of cash! I would go back if my friends really wanted to, but there are other spots along/around Polk that I prefer. The disco balls are awfully cute though!

Shine is like a comfy old sweater. Or a comfy old pair of shoes. I pull 'em out from the back of my closet on occasion when I miss wearing 'em. Then they go back in the closet, I totally forget I ever had that sweater or those shoes, I then suddenly and randomly remember - wash, rinse, repeat, the cycle begins again, you get the picture. Shine is a good fixin' of breakbeats, electro and house. I'm more of a hip-hop/pop kind of gal but, every so often, I am *itching* for some breaks/electro/house. Like Jodeci, I'm feenin'. Must. Get. To. Shine. Now. Help. Me. Super casual, super chill. Wear sneakers and a track jacket and you'll fit right in. Smaller space but, it's intimate. I can get up close and personal with the DJ or the stripper pole (j/k - you can't strip tease to good breaks, that's just wrong). There is also a raised mini "stage" area so you can take a sit and people watch - or make friends with the stripper pole and dance on the raised platform. Some booths in the back - I think it's first come, first served but, I be wrong. Oh - and there's that infamous photo booth in the back so that you can take glamour shots. I would give Shine four (4) stars except: - The electronic music is hit or miss. I wish they'd post the type of music on the calendar rather then just listing the name of the event or the record labels or promotion companies. - There is always a line for the restroom (only 1 ladies' restroom). Preferred events: Angels of Bass, Fresh.
