by Devin Stradling on The owner of Icon, Mitch, is an absolute sweetheart. I threw a birthday party at Icon in early 2007 when it was still fairly new so, it was relatively unknown and not very crowded. He hooked me up with a free bottle of champagne - no charge to book the "private" room and no cover for my guests. Almost a year later, Mitch *still* remembers me and always hooks my friends and me up with free admission and drinks. (Yeah, he even hooked up a guy friend once. Apparently, this guy thinks Mitch is so cool that, if Mitch were a girl, he'd make out with him.) Description: Icon has three rooms + bar area - a) main floor (DJ, currently plays more "hyphy" Bay Area music than any other club I've been to in SF - you decide if that's a good thing or not); b) small back room (DJ, music ranges from freestyle to hip-hop to bhangra, can be booked for private parties) and c) even smaller "private" room that contains only seating and mirrors. Crowd: Although Mitch is a kick-ass club owner, unfortunately that does not make up for the ghetto-fabulous "Man Jose" crowd that typically frequents this joint. I'm not looking to get cornered by scary pick-in-my-hair-chain-on-my-neck-gat-in-my-pocket type of fellas. The few yuppies/hotties/pieces of eye candy in the crowd are not too difficult to spot when 95% of the crowd is my height or shorter. Male:Female ratio is something like 3:1. It's crazy packed on Sat nights but, I'm too scared of the crowd to sharpen my elbows. Music: Main room plays WAY too much Bay Area rap. I got love for the "Yay Area" but, if I hear another E-40 song, I'm gonna "go stupid" on the freakin' DJ. Icon is still a pretty good time with a large group of friends (i.e. bday party, esp when Mitch offers such a sweet deal). Ladies, you might need a token male with you for protection. Fellas, if you're looking to meet some women, be prepared for a swordfight. [Regardless, Mitch - my friends and I dig you!!]
