TOB - only good thing is they are close to work and home. I want to like this place. Its so convenient and it has potential. But there are issues. I have been here many times and service has always been sub-par. The bartenders are slow as is the wait staff and kitchen. On one occasion the bartender was so green he was putting Manhattans in pint glasses. Now, this might be a good thing for some of you readers but I was not impressed. He looked downright confused at the request so it is no surprise he put it in a beer glass. The food is not great - burgers are possibly from a box that I could buy at the grocery store. I had nachos here that were literally tostitos with cheese whiz and maybe a few tomatoes (although I think they have since removed these from the menu). Nothing is worth discussing, its bar food in its saddest form. The atmosphere is odd - leftover decor from JL Sullivan's remains and is an odd mix with the 30+ TVs all around the bar and dining area. The bathrooms are disgraceful. Not kept even when the bar is hardly full. Lastly on the cons-side of things: I hosted a fund raising event here and while the person I spoke with was accommodating and helpful, when I actually got there for the event, she was not there and the staff in charge seemed unprepared and disinterested. They barely lifted a finger and were understaffed for the size of the gathering. On a positive note, this is a good place to watch a game. It gets crowded but its lots of fun to see all the fans getting into the games and with the amount of TVs in there, no matter where you are sitting or standing, you are guaranteed to see every play. There are also good daily bar specials and a ridiculously easy quizzo on Tuesday nights at 8pm with Big Daddy Graham. So if you're going to go, check it out on Tuesday for some laughs.

"I'm on a boat!" if you, too, want to eat burgers and drink coronas out of steel pails full of ice, all while sitting on a boat, then you should go to the Frying Pan. Does it smell like spilled cheap beer?  Do people get really drunk here?  Do people (probably) get drunk and seasick and puke over the railing?  Yes, yes, and yes. But are you on a boat (yet still in NYC)?  Absolutely.

We went there for their fund raiser for "A Witches Brew", their second annual fund raiser. They raise funds for the Ghost Society, which give tours all over SF of the haunted places. It was like halloween in September. We have been to El Rio before for a fund raiser and decided to go again because it was so fun the last time. The bar is old, that is obvious, but the place has old SF ambiance, with a long bar, nice staff, a pool table, and a great outdoor patio. They have a deck and a stage. The fund raiser had some fun local music onstage, with The Poisoner, a one man show, who plays a cool black guitar and is also a comedian I think. There is a burlesque show, which has been there before, which was hiliarious, and another band which I think we have seen before there. They have a tarot reading shack in the back, and vendors selling some interesting stuff. They had a raffle for a buck a ticket (we bought like 6) and a wheel of fortune for a buck, which has some fun prizes. I won some bracelets a ghost hunting kit, and hubby and I both won free 15 minute sessions of tarot reading. The beer was cheap and the food was free. There are a mix of people who show up to these things, from goth to the retro-style kind, but they were all friendly and having fun.
