Sunday's a Drag - HOLIDAY EDITION (that is the name of the Sunday Brunch at the Starlight Room). This is something that has been going on for a few years, so a group of us decided to go. You get two things when you go - a buffet brunch and drag show. Brunch - Um, 2 stars. Not the best. You had an omelet bar which was probably the best part. They have a meat carving station - not sure what the meat was but it was pretty bland and you had to ask for more than one piece if you wanted more (and you will because they give you a pretty skinny piece). Bacon was good. Other stuff was okay - nothing fancy or very tasty. Holiday Drag show was fantastic. Hosted by Donna Sachet - she does a great job. All of the performers were fantastic as well. They definitely have the performance down! The holiday show was great, because at the end you get snow. Oh, and don't be surprised if you go and get pulled up on stage!

I didn't want to like it. I've been avoiding East Side Showroom based on the "hipster" factor and the negative reviews detailing a long wait and less than attentive service. I had mis-imagined the space as well, as some kind of over the top 1930's whore house decor. My bad. The casual bistro was comfortable (moreso than Justine's IMHO) with really cool appointments evocative of the Paris of old. I went specifically for the Austin Restaurant Week menu, and more specifically because the entire menu was sourced locally. I opted for the Bibb and Pear salad which was amazingly fresh with tender Bella Verdi lettuce. The entree I chose was the Country Fried Rabbit with Basil Puree and Frites. Perfection. The Basil Puree added an unexpected but delicious touch to both the fried rabbit and the frites. The only disappointing menu item was the local cheese plate. I'm currently eating only local cheeses and I would have chosen differently. The Brazos Valley Cheddar is good, but I did not care for either of the Pola cheeses, although the accompanying candied pecans and preserves were lovely. Our entrees took quite some time to arrive, but we knew going in that this was likely to be the case, so we arrived early. Our service was otherwise spot on and attentive. Hipsters beware, I'll be back. And I'm so not cool.

This is the most Hollywood place you could possibly choose to spend your money on food. Except that the food was good. And I guess so was the service. I would just tell you that if you are willing to spend this kind of money, you are way better off just going to Osteria Mozza. It's better food, less attitude.
