This was basically the typical dive bar but for gay men. The feel is much more casual and it's a getaway from the rest of the glamorous West Hollywood scene. I ordered a mixed drink and I just remember that it was harsh on the throat and it tasted like gasoline mixed with sugar and juice. Gross. They also do not card to get in the bar nor do they when purchasing a drink. If only I knew this when I was underage...

Ok, so sometimes I go against the grain. I have my reasons why... Rezzies for 7:30 on a Friday. Not necessary. The place was empty. They sat us in the middle of the entire room. I'm thinking...WTF? Ambiance.... Some random art on one wall, high ceilings, small bar area against the back wall, stale seating for twos and fours all over the place.. Stiff back chairs with hardwood tables. No salt and pepper shakers even though the food was bland.. No flowers or candles....?!! Service.... Yes they checked on us. Note to wait staff...when you ask me "how is everything?" and I say..." its just ok". You don't say..."great well let us know if you need anything else". I'm thinking check at this moment. I ordered the Ribeye. I know my steaks. I dine out enough to know the difference between a grissly strip steak and a ribeye. This my friend was NOT a ribeye. Fail. It came with no sides. So, I ordered the Polenta. Creamy and actually the best part of the meal. Its served in a big cereal type bowl. Where is the presentation in that?? I won't even get into the wine selection. It didn't impress me at all. Overall place was 1 for food, and 1 for service. I can't give anything for ambiance. I didn't stay for the show. The entire time we are thinking should we cancel our orders and just hit the Mission Cart street food? I can tell you. It would have been better than what I had. Still love the Mission!

I've now been to this venue twice and I'm not completely sure why they named it "cafe" because it is clearly a bar? That being said, it is a very nice place with a good amount of space for drinking, mingling, and being seen in the scene. My favorite feature at Sugar Cafe is by far the large dual sided movie screen that plays films both for it's patrons and is somehow reflected outside to the passers on the street. Not sure why more places don't use this technology? My only complaint would be that the second time I went there, which was a Wednesday night, the bar tender was an dick. Although he did look a bit like Tom Cruise in Cocktail, his service was textbook ass-hole. C'mon bro...You're getting paid -mostly in cash- to make drinks in a pretty cool bar and on top of that, as luck would have it, you kinda look like Maverick. Lighten up and be nice to the "cafe" customer.
