by Rochelle M. on I went to Estate last night as part of my friend's birthday celebration. To my surprise, after paying a $10 cover charge since we were on her guest list (versus the normal $20), we were herded into an elevator and ushered downstairs to pay a ridiculous $6 per item at the coat check. Despite a few fun moments with friends, the club was a disappointment due to the poorly mixed drinks and rude bouncers. My friend (the birthday girl) went outside the club to make sure all of her friends who were on the guest list got in okay, and was then informed by the bouncer that she would not be allowed reentry, despite the fact that the guest list was in her name and it was her birthday. I was outraged by this and the fact that she did nothing deserving of getting kicked out of the club and denied re-entry. They just outright refused to stamp hands and let people back into the club, even for those just stepping outside to let others (on their guest list) in. Rather than go to Estate, save your money and do what we did, go to a worthwhile, all-night establishment like the iHop in Harvard Square.
by Maxwell Sudekum on I've finally figured out what I need to throw a party people think is good: I need to put some artwork up on the walls, get some shitty bartenders, and spin some mediocre electronica. My bad, 111 Minna already does all that. That explains why people think it's so good.
by Meredith F. on I saw the other negative reviews of Strata, and I definitely would have agreed with some of them the last couple of times I went in '06 and '07. I went a couple of weekends ago on a FRIDAY (not sure about Saturdays), and it was GREAT. There was an actual dj spinning hip hop, r&b, and reggae, not just someone pressing "play" on iTunes like everywhere else these days. The crowd was good- looking, well-dressed, and mostly male, which the ladies would appreciate... (Sorry guys!) There was a $20 cover, but I also got there late (around 12:30), and I was with a guy. All of the ladies-only groups were getting pulled out of line and comped though. I am definitely going back!
