Love it! You can avoid the madness of weekend crowds for less than half of general admission prices. I accidentally forgot my ID, so no admission. Jay did everything she could to refund us, but it wouldn't work because we bought tickets through another vendor. She e-mailed her colleague who was supervising the following week's event about our mishap, so no problems with our second try. The aquariums are the best part!

Avalon used to be THE place to go Saturday nights. Then it became OK. Stressful, but OK. Now I am not feeling it anymore. By "feeling it" I mean the vibe, the club goers. I haven't been here for almost a year and my friends and I thought we should stop RSVPing to friend's house parties and go dance some real music. Crowded, weird people, one bouncer was an a-hole, busy bartenders who would help themselves with their tip before giving back change and parking was a nightmare. We left earlier than we expected because one girl stepped with her sharp heels on my friend's foot.

Hoping to get a change from the typical San Francisco club scene, I wasn't too impressed with Marbella. I think Visionshock was their saving grace, hence the 3 stars. VENUE: From the outside, Marbella resembles a Spanish garden with a grand concrete staircase that leads to another steel staircase. What's with ALL the stairs?!?!? Marbella brings a whole new meaning to the concept, "Don't judge a book by it's cover"...b/c the cover is downright DECEIVING! Upon entering, the space itself looks drab. It resembles Suite 181 in SF which is not impressive. Basically, a whole lotta concrete grey walls surround the area, with a stage for go-go dancers and several chandeliers to make the place "seem" classy. The dancefloor was small and people were basically elbow to elbow. There is another space to the left of the stage, but those were all for table service. DRINKS: There are 3 bars; one main and 2 smaller ones. Drinks were PRICEY!!! Beers were $8 and Top Shelf Cocktails were $13, but WELL WORTH IT! They were STRONG and after 2-3 (even with a high alkie tolerance like myself) you're pretty much blasted! Drinks were easy to get; no shoving was necessary and you don't have d-bags trying to cut in front of you. STAFF: I was quite surprised at how the friendly the promotion and club staff and staff was. The promoters were super friendly and kept us up-to-date on how much longer we had to wait. We normally have to wait 45 min -1 hour at SF clubs and although there was a line almost out the gate, it only took us 10-15 minutes to get in! The security greeted us. And, the bartenders were quick and friendly. What a change from some SF club staff who can be downright rude and uptight! MUSIC: Hip-hop and Top 40s, so no complaints! CROWD: This was my first clubbing experience at LA and people had told me that the crowd (i.e. guys) was different in a good way. It was Asian night sicne it was promoted by Vision Shock. And, I would have to agree that the crowd here is better looking than the crowd in SF. However, better looking doesn't necessarily mean better everything. Although better looking, many of the guys had the typical d-bag appearance of being cocky and stuck up...no surprise there! If I lived in LA, I wouldn't make it a point to go back to Marbella for the venue itself because it was very underwhelming. Being Hollywood and all, where's the glitz and glamour?
