We had tickets to see Sagao Wantanabe, a world famous jazz musician at 7.  Had dinner reservations at 5:30 and the waiter had seats for the show reserved for us, 3rd row, center. The food here were hit and miss.  I was skeptical since it seemed more like an Americanized fushion restaurant but some of the dishes were quite good.  The edamame with garlic is a must try.  It's the first time I had edamame in saute garlic and it was quite delicious.  The sashimi sampler is surprisingly very fresh.  The cucumber was very fresh but when I asked for more cucumber, I was forced to order the cucumber salad.  The cucumber alone was good, whatever sauce they put on it was horrible.  We had the kobe beef sushi, which was nothing spectacular.  We finished it off with the hamachi kama yaki (grilled yellowtail cheek).  The dish would have been perfect without the curry powder.  It just tastes weird with the curry powder and the ponzu sauce would have been sufficient for additional flavor.  I skipped the skin and ate the inside of the fish, when the flavor of the hamachi was still enjoyable without being masked by curry.  If you order this dish, please ask for no curry. The sake variety sampler was a good choice to cater to different tastes.  I liked the more fruitier flavors and others liked drier sake. The service was alright, although we missed a few minutes of the show due to the waiter's delay.  The show was fantastic (hence the extra star).  The musicians were really enjoying themselves and it shows in their performance.  Wantanabe-san was great and he was quite a charmer for being older than my grandpa.  They were a little distracted by latecomers, and I blame the late guests.  If you were gonna catch a show, either be on time or don't show up at all.  It's rude to disturb a performance.  You can also make dinner reservations later and enjoy the free live show in the restaurant area of Yoshi.  The live show in the restaurant featuring up and coming musicians and local bands wasn't spectacular, but it's free.

You definitely have to be a baller or know someone if you want to get in quickly. Otherwise, prepare to be herded and treated like cattle in a line that's all for show before you get anywhere near the front door. The pretentiousness of this club is far worse than anything I've ever seen in LA, Vegas, and New York. As an unassuming tourist, I discovered that the guest list on their website is there just for looks... everyone working the club played dumb when it was brought up. That wouldn't have been so bad (hey, it's a given that everyone's trying to make a dollar), but then I witnessed the 47 year old man in a spangly military jacket fronting the line tell a female club-goer - who was minding her own freakin' business btw (and no, it wasn't me :P) - through a bullhorn that she was ugly. Straight up. And no, she was not. And um, who does that?? You're a 47 year old man in a military jacket from Hot Topic holding a bullhorn. Get over yourself! It wasn't long before my friends and I were over it and headed elsewhere. I'm sure the club itself is nice and all that, but damn, no reason to treat people like that!

I went to a friend of a friend's birthday event here at 10PM on a Saturday.  This place looks really ghetto and outdated from outside but inside it's really trendy and lounge-like.  They sort of have three different areas; when you walk in you are immediately at the bar/lounge area where they have a good amount of tables and a nice fireplace to the right side and the bar on your left side.  There are a few nice sized flat screen televisions playing music video mash-ups with updated modern songs that you can boogie to which is pretty cool. The drinks were strong here but were not mixed very well.  I ordered two Caipirinhas and they were made by two different bartenders. The first one was good and the second one was terrible.  It took about 15 minutes to get a replacement for the terrible one (and the bartender who made it was being a complete jerk and refused to make it again so they got another bartender to make it) and it was still bad but tasted better than the last one. The drink prices were at $9.00 a mixed drink. When you walk towards the back, you will pass through the dining room and then the very last section is the dance floor. The thing about this place is it's really loud and has the possibility of being really overly crowded.  I had to literally yell out what I was saying the entire night when I was meeting/mingling with people. The crowd here ranges from early twenties to mid-thirties, an even mixture of both men and women, more college than professional, and overly dressed for a night out on the town.  It sort of felt like a hook up place. I would want to come back again but maybe on a different night when it's a bit less wild ;)
