by Mia F. on A-ok for this classy establishment. I don't get why people get skeeved out by this place... haven't you been to a nightclub outside cambridge? i say the skeevier the better, you can't go wrong with a night out on the town with no action, especially if it's skeeve action. But seriously, this place isn't half as sketchy as all the wack rumors i've heard..... Standard 5-dollar cover, standard night bar service. I went here 2 weeks in a row on "80's night" i'd say 40% 80's music, 20% 90's club music and 40% modern poppy club stuff. The Dj looked like he was a lot more real-deal than pressing play on his ipod for 4 hours, unfortunately between the 2 weeks the songs varied ever so slightly, which i guess is partially disappointing and at the same time partially encouraging......in a week's time i was able to choreograph awkward dance moves to numerous songs without being consciously aware and then realize a couple random people out there were in the same boat as me. Awkward and awesome. I like the fact that no one really takes anything seriously there, which is key because - why take a drunken night out with friends seriously, especially if you're dancing to infectious awesomely awful 80's muzac till the wee hours of the morning......what's so serious about dancing out in bars anyway? useful tips: 1. don't drop your pint glass on the dance floor. it's messy, and glass is impossible to clean in scantily lit areas, and it really puts a damper on random breakdancing.. 2. wool sweaters are a busy dance floor no-no. nothing's worse than rubbin' up on a random itchy wool garment while bustin' a groove to george michael. wear layers, a cotton blend turtleneck will provide ample warmth for those harsh new england winter nights. 3. get a room! - dry humping on any given wall in this place (or alternate location) is not really attractive - although permitted by the establishment, 99 out of 100 surveyed say "get a room." 4. go with a group of people. 5. A pretty good place to watch tv sports during less clubby hours of the day.
by Kelley Ryburn on Went to a pre-opening here. Loved the concept before I actually tasted anything - a very interesting variety of gourmet burgers - pate burger, po-boy burger, etc. But the majority of burgers (we sampled most of them that they were serving that night, roughly 6 different ones) missed the mark on this night. Apparently the burgers will range from $6 to $50 for a kobe burger, and I think paying more than $10 for any of the burgers I tried would be unsatisfying. The choice of sides that night were fries, onion rings, Caesar salad and a curry type of cauliflower thing. I really liked the cauliflower, but others at my table didn't. The Caesar dressing on the salad had no taste. The buns were the same on all the burgers and they were nothing special about them. I would have loved a thinner bun with some toasty/crispiness to it, whereas theirs were pretty fluffy/oily/bready. Richard Blaise, while present behind the bar sporadically, did not speak to any of the diners while I was there, which I thought was pretty rude for a "friends and family" pre-opening. I would have liked to heard him talk about the menu he designed. When i attended a pre-opening at Straits, Chef Chris Yeo chatted with all his diners and it was awesome to hear him talk about his creations. I'll go back once they are officially opened to give it another shot. I really liked the decor, and the staff was very friendly. Hopefully they will execute better
by Justin C. on Ah, Sullivan.... if only I could give it a sixth star, we'd then have both it's place in my heart and the number of brain cells it's been responsible for extracting from my head! ;) This is the spot where I got my start as a DJ in this fair city, the first place where I really got to play the music I love, loudly, to an audience of people that were well & truly up for it. I've spent many a LONG wknd evening here, as have many of my friends; it's a home base for fans of real underground dance music and has that familial vibe to it. The music is generally house of all forms, though they breakbeats some Thursdays. The flagship of the venue remains the Saturday night deep / tech house party, which began with Matter:form and has continued with Basic NYC and other crews consistently bringing in fresh DJ talent from the US & beyond - regulars include Jay Tripwire, Hipp-E, Asad Rizvi & Garth to name a few. Sullivan Room is currently closed for an expansion & re-design, which should give it a nice boost for '07. They are re-opening on February 9 with a new Core Audio sound system, expanding the space and re-doing the DJ booth, all of which were necessary for the club to compete seriously with places like Cielo. I think you will see some tightening over a previously lax door policy, meaning everyone will still be able to come but more people will have to shell out the $10 to get in. I'm looking forward to the new Sully! http://www.sullivanroo...
