Reviewed by: A native Californian in New York. Learned from an experiencd local that almost never sleeps (he's always partying!): 3 F's: Financial, Famous, Fashionable. If this isn't you, you might need a miracle getting in. This is the NYC I expected. After 2am, and without a contact inside, it was a no entry ending to this story. They don't need everyone's business I guess.

This is a nice place, look at all the people! Boy, people must sure love it here, that guy apparently even sleeps on this bench! You must really like a place to cocoon yourself in the Statesman, wrapped up in stories about the economic downturn, huddled over in the crisp breeze through the night and into the early morning... Speaking of morning, it's morning! It's not even 9 a.m., and wow that man seems delighted to start his day. Sitting there, smiling at everyone so eagerly, sitting in his running minivan and making direct, inviting eye contact at everyone. Maybe he's waiting on a friend? Oh! He's got a friend, that young gentleman with the beads in his hair, look at them talk. They could go on for hours! They're sharing cigars? No... Swisher Sweets! Look at them talk, SAY! Did he just give his friend a gift? That guy is so modest, he just slyly took the gift and slipped it into his pocket while nervously looking to make sure nobody could see, I bet it's his birthday and that's why he doesn't want anyone to know why his friend is giving him gifts. Some people don't like a big fuss on their day. Wait a minute... he's leaving... this man has another friend! Same situation, wait, wait, no, I must be confused he's getting presents too. Hmm... and another, wow, sure must be a lot of birthdays this time! I wonder how many months ago 9 months was, there must have been love in the air back then! What a sunny, delightful place! A complete joy! I even feel pretty! At least three gentleman have hit on me, maybe even four if I could speak the same language of the fourth, but about 90% sure, totally hitting on me. It's as if I was scantily dressed in a nightclub the way they're just staring and leering, wow, some people would kill for this kind of self esteem booster! I have never felt so attractive in all my life and I'm bundled up in three sweaters and a turtleneck! Boy oh boy, do I like it here! Hey look! A new friend! This aggressive, young gentleman wants to borrow my phone, "No sirree, Bob" I say, not wanting to come off as impolite, just not being as cordial as I ought to have been. WOW! He's threatening me, now! Way to keep me in line! I'm going to mind my manners from here on in. I can't wait to go home and review this place! It's great for birthdays, you feel hot, you make friends, and you learn your lessons a la Miss Manners just they way you should. It's a place for go-getters, singles, and downright goshdarnit, good citizens!

Ah, Sullivan.... if only I could give it a sixth star, we'd then have both it's place in my heart and the number of brain cells it's been responsible for extracting from my head! ;) This is the spot where I got my start as a DJ in this fair city, the first place where I really got to play the music I love, loudly, to an audience of people that were well & truly up for it. I've spent many a LONG wknd evening here, as have many of my friends; it's a home base for fans of real underground dance music and has that familial vibe to it. The music is generally house of all forms, though they breakbeats some Thursdays. The flagship of the venue remains the Saturday night deep / tech house party, which began with Matter:form and has continued with Basic NYC and other crews consistently bringing in fresh DJ talent from the US & beyond - regulars include Jay Tripwire, Hipp-E, Asad Rizvi & Garth to name a few. Sullivan Room is currently closed for an expansion & re-design, which should give it a nice boost for '07. They are re-opening on February 9 with a new Core Audio sound system, expanding the space and re-doing the DJ booth, all of which were necessary for the club to compete seriously with places like Cielo. I think you will see some tightening over a previously lax door policy, meaning everyone will still be able to come but more people will have to shell out the $10 to get in. I'm looking forward to the new Sully! http://www.sullivanroo...
