by Jim C. on Avaon is definitely the best spot in Hollywood to experience dance music. Their sound system, stage-set-up, and dancefloor just rivals any other club in town. Circus, Vanguard, and the Musicbox just don't compare. I DJed here in 2001 through 2005. I would love to come back and spin a set here sometime soon.
by Coco D. on I don't get it. I just don't get it. For YEARS I've been hearing about what a great venue this is. And I just. don't. get. it. I think that it's thoroughly mediocre and there is nothing interesting about it. They do tend to have pretty good booking, and the bartenders seem nice, and the bathrooms are pretty. It's just.....I dunno. I could take it or leave it. The energy of the place just feels odd. I mean, I like that there's the mingling area or whatever to get away from the crowds. EDIT 6/29/07 Holler. I wanted to give this place another star because it really is a good place to see a show, and the Swedish American is a pretty nice backstage area and I bet their food is good. But I just can't. Why not? Well, when I went here recently I got a steady 3 count on all of my drinks from every bartender in the place. If you want to charge $6 for a cocktail, you better at least give me the standard pour. Also, last night I tried to close out my tab, and was given a flat out NO from the staff, and they made me stand at the bar and wait for like 20 minutes for my fucking credit card. And I mean, this wasn't even a sold out show. It's not like the bar was slammed. Oh, wait. The other thing. I tried to sit down on a stool, and this bartender told me I couldn't, and she came out from behind the bar to sit down and drink WHILE I WAS WAITING FOR MY FUCKING CREDIT CARD. Dude. Unaccaptable on so many levels. So I'm not too thrilled with du Nord right now. No more stars! Also, I would like to note that I am not some sort of douchebag who really deserves this kind of behavior. I'm a nice person. I tip. I don't do shit like order kamikazes and lemon drops. I try to be a professional drinker, so I think I deserve professional service. It just seems really boring there. Like boring people go there or something. I mean, I know they don't. It just seems that way to me.
