I was really excited to try dbar, as it's always hopping and I'm anxious to try anything nice in Dorchester. I must say that overall, the food was wonderful. The cocktails were strong, the crab appetizer innovative and delicious, the truffle mac and cheese was special, and the brownie chocolate cake was heavenly. That being said, the service was atrocious. It took us over TWO HOURS to complete our meal, and not by choice. We waited over an hour to receive our main courses. They forgot to give us bread, and at the end of the meal when there were only around four tables left, the staff was talking to each other at the bar while we were waiting and waiting and waiting to get our desserts. It was ridiculous. Then we were double charged on an item, and when I pointed it out, the server seemed annoyed that he had to change the receipt. Were the servers cute and the atmosphere great? Yes, but you must be prepared to put up with inattentive service and the possibility that you will not be treated as a respected customer if you want the opportunity to try their delicious food.

Been here all of twice. For a Friday/Saturday where you're looking to get hammered and listen to main stream hip hop this is a decent place. It's split into multiple sections, one half with more tables and standabout area, one more intimate lounge space, and another wing with open space for dancin'. Three bars total. I say three stars because everything was just OK really, I don't recall hating or loving any part of the visit, and the drinks were priced where I figured they'd be. The lamest part I recall was it being a Friday night in a huge bar and there was NO coat check. Fix that please. The other night we strolled by the place and I have to say the door man doubles as a great sales guy. It would have never occurred to us to head to Bruno's, but as we passed by he said "Hey, want a hand stamp? Then if you come back later you can skip the $10 cover". Sure enough a few hours and drinks later down the block we just HAD to take him up on the free cover he'd given us, SCORE! Sure, we spent mad loot on drinks anyway, kudos again to his sales skills. The ambiance is that dim lit sexy feel, or at least I'm sure that's the target. The hip hop flowing out the door makes you think you've come upon some urban hip hop club hidden in the Mission but it's not, it's just another version of Harry's (since it's owned by the same peeps, Owl Tree too), complete with drinks etched into the mirrors, with a crowd that's looking to party. It's certainly better than Harry's. They used to have reggae on Wednesday night with dirt cheap Red Stripe but I don't know if that's going on any more. Amusing people watching for sure if that's your thing. The hip hop was paired oh so well by a 6 ft something large, like really large dude who was shaking it like a stripper. The best part being the girls who just could not get enough of him, I mean this dude was huge and just workin' it like he'd been busting it for loot all his life. Another kudos goes out to you large man, wherever you may be.

Venu was the first club I went to in Boston. Since then and to this day, it's always been one of my favourites. I don't really care about all the typical negative commentary some people like to throw at it (and places like Rumor, Aria, etc. as well) - often, I feel it's because they dislike the scene, and if you don't like the scene, well if you know what to expect then don't go there and find somewhere that is more to your liking for goodness sake! I like that this place is full of the 'international crowd' - well, I should (and do) since I'm part of it. I like that it's full of stylish people who like to party/dance this way. Sure, some people can be snobby, but not all are snobs (including myself) and you'll find snobs and non-snobs in pretty much every group in society - it's just a question of what they're snobby about. Yes, bouncers can be prickish sometimes, but you know what? They're bouncers in Boston. They can often be pricks, and while I will never make excuses for the ones that abuse their 'power' and are obnoxious for no good reason, for some cases I have to admit that they've got to deal with tough stuff like the zillion fake IDs every day and things like people not appropriately dressed, too many people trying to get in with the fire marshalls bugging them about capacity, blah blah blah. And some of the bouncers have been really nice, it just depends on which one really. I guess my point is, I'm sort of sick of people ragging on the stigma of such clubs just cos it's not their scene. End rant. Choose the night you go depending on what kinda music you like - a little pre-investigation could help you out here. The cover charge doesn't bother me, for the decor and type of club it's standard here and if you get on the guest list you can get in for less anyway (if you go before midnight, that is). Drinks are not cheap but they're just as pricey in any similar atmosphere and it's not like it's a dive bar so I didn't expect them to be cheap. The crowd is (mostly) always well-dressed, ready to party, and I like the music - usually, great club and some house and other hits that can keep me dancing all night long. My friend used to DJ here on Tuesday nights, and it made the middle of the week one of the best times to party for me and my friends. That ended quite a while ago, but I've still enjoyed the music always, when I go on the right night (for my tastes). Going with a bunch of my friends, I'm always pretty sure to have a good time. I've had a lot of amazing memories from going here over the years, and although I really don't go anywhere near as often as I used to now (yeah, call me granny), I hope it will always continue to be good times when I do make it. 4.5 stars at least from me.
