by susannah r. on I have yet to find a dance club that I just looooove in Austin, so giving any place a "rating" raises all sorts of existential-ish doubts- what is a 5? Does such a gold standard even exist? I don't know. Anyhow, if you're somehow still reading, I really enjoy Pure. I realize that yes, its not un-ridiculous, with its generic cool urban blue lighting and its throngs of boys standing staring in a circle around the dance floor. But nonetheless, people reliably dance, and enthusiastically so, here. The music? Euhhhh. It is the exact same kind of crappo poppy-rap mishmash that one finds anywhere downtown, but heck, that's just the way non-hipster clubs in Austin roll. Drinks take approximately 253 years, but damnit, I'm still an undergrad, I can still pre-game! The people at Pure tend to be pretty polite, or at least the male segment of said, and there's always a decent crowd on weekends.
by L S. on If you are Dominican, you might know how to feel when you visit a relative family that you have not seen for a long time; they treat you like you are going to die the next day, so you feel so special you are even scare. That is how we felt at Rancho Jubilee tonight. The food is great, I ordered carne a la criolla or meat creole, and every bite that i had, felt that my mouth ask me for the next one, (hurry up). Wao. My wife ordered "chivo Liniero" or Goat creole ,we don't recomend it, try their mofongos but not with shrimp because they have to perfect it (the shrimp come out soggy and tend to change the test of the mofongo). Kids? no way I'll bring them again. They have no menu for kids, not even the activity menus like other restaurants. Drinks.. ok..
by Toccara Frohman on Trying to avoid rush hour traffic on the grand central I would pass by the is place and be like what the f... is goin on over there. The place looks like a huge straw roofed hut with a freakin windmill next to it. This is all on a corner in the middle of residential queens right next to LaGuardia? I finally had the chance to find out that it is a Dominican club/restaurant. Great I like Dominican food so I went with my wife and another couple the other night. Upon walking in the front door all I could think is that this place would fit right in at Epcot Center. The owner finely duplicated a restaurant from the shores of Santo Domingo. I enjoyed the atmosphere, it makes you feel like your are somewhere else. We ordered chicken croquetas as an app along with my presidente. For the main I ordered some plate that had steak, eggs, sausage, avocado, rice and beans. My wife got fish wrapped in a banana leaf, my buddy got goat and his girl got lemon-grass chicken. I think i was expecting more because of the atmosphere but it was ok. My friend's goat was very tasty, I liked it better than mine. My wife's fish was ok as well but the veges that came it were still frozen. C'mon man frozen veges, that's wack. My buddy's girl also had still frozen veges with her chicken but one upped it as well. She got mashed potatoes on the side as well and they were definitely hungry jacks... straight from the box. So frozen veges and boxed mashed taters, kinda shady to me. I gave this place 2 stars for the food and 1 whole star for the atmosphere. Too bad the food didn't live up to hype of the place because if it did it would be a gem of a restaurant.
