by christina l. on the great american music hall is one of my favorite venues in san francisco. i've seen numerous shows here, and the staff is friendly and the acoustics are great. despite its location (the tenderloin is hella sketch) and exorbitant food prices, the great american music hall has a particular ambience and intimacy that is incomparable to similar venues such as rickshaw stop and bottom of the hill.

BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM techno music gets old but the outside area provides a much needed break from the bass-heavy main room. large club with a decent layout. lots of nooks and crannies to sneak away to - especially if you wrangle yourself a VIP bracelet. it's the crowd that holds this place back for me. i didn't find people to be pushy or rude - but the vibe is definitely saturated in a certain trashy "i-dont-know-what". you can still have a great time if you suspend disbelief and fake it till you make it. and really, what else would you expect from a giant techno venue? such are the remnants of the golden days of the rave scene. 3 stars is probably too critical because after all this bitching and moaning, i'm bound to forget how lame the scene is and go back in about 6-10 months.
